You are looking at a wildfire in the mountains north of Los Angeles that exploded overnight, threatening homes and producing a huge cloud of smoke and that’s just one of ten major wildfires burning across the state tonight. NBC’s Miguel Almaguer joins me now from Altadena, California. Miguel.

Lester. Good evening. This fire has proven to be sporadically down, then kicking right back up and tonight firefighters say they have a big problem on their hands.

A desperate fight to beat back the flames, million dollar home with breathtaking views of a fire closing in, it doesn’t get much closer than this on the front lines, the station fire in La Canada remains the largest of four major blazes chewing across southern California. Bone-dry brush and steep hills make the fight for containment a difficult one, new rounds of mandatory evacuations have been ordered, 1,800 homes are threatened, Forrest Brakeman sent his family to safe ground Thursday. Now that the fire is closing in, he will leave if he has to.

“I am not a hero.”

Despite calm conditions Friday night, the station fire continues to plow across rugged terrain, the overnight orange glow, an ominous sign this fight is far from over. Hours later, daybreak sheds new light on a fire that shows no mercy, swallowing hillside after hillside.

It’s the topography that’s giving firefighters such a problem here, these canyons are so steep and many of them haven’t burned in decades.

So the attack continues on the ground and in the air.

“This is a very serious, eh, situation that we’re in right now.”

The fight to save homes and for containment is far from over.

This fire is only 5% contained, it’s charred thousands of acres and as you can see behind me, air qualities are major problems, so are triple-digit temperatures. Lester.

Miguel Almaguer, thank you very much.
