Reporter:  Dr. Niu is thinking about cooking something tasty for her family during the Spring Festival, but her tight work shifts in a hospital based in Beijing always leave her no time for shopping in supermarkets. One time, she came across a website called "Beijing Basket." She ordered a package of vegetables priced at 50 yuan and to her surprise, the order came in only four hours later.

"It's really convenient, just a call to them, or make an order online, then they will deliver to your doorstep. I ordered in the morning and the vegetables arrived in the afternoon."

As Spring Festival approaches, the online vegetable websites have seen more business than before. Normally, they only take orders priced higher than 80 yuan but now, in order to compete with other online vegetable sellers, they've decided to lower their delivery threshold to 50 yuan per package. Zheng Yun works for such an online vegetable sales website. He says many customers can find economical deals from their online store.

"Compared to the vegetable prices from the supermarkets, our products are cheaper. For example, the supermarket price for carrots is 3.2 yuan per kilogram, but our price is only 2.4 yuan. Chinese leaf is only 2.2 yuan versus the supermarket's 2.6 yuan."

In fact, online vegetable purchases emerged two or three years ago in big cities like Guangzhou in Southern China. However, many such businesses went bankrupt due to logistical problems. The first vegetable sales website in China, Guangdong Vegetable Alliance, is an example. But now, the business has again picked up its momentum.

The first thing many online vegetable shops did was to break through delivery barriers across the city. They have established cooperation with local residential communities to provide nearby delivery. A complete network connecting many local vegetable markets is now completely formed in metropolises like Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou.

Online shops now have taken the Spring Festival period as their perfect business opportunity to enlarge their network. Operational president of Shenzhen based egu365.com, Liu Zhenbin, says the whole network now runs much smoother than before.

"After taking the order from online customers, we would contact our wholesalers right away. Then the wholesalers would allot and wrap up the vegetables and deliver then directly from the storerooms, which would greatly shorten our transportation duration. We have our own delivery vehicles and manpower, which makes it easier for us to control the timing. We've also got some refrigerated trucks, containers, and ice bags to keep products like fish, meat and vegetables fresh for like seven to eight hours."

The online salesmen say the colder of the weather, the better their business. Those white collars who usually go home late at night, and housewives who have to take care of babies as well as many elderly people are their loyal customers.
