The assault began mid afternoon,volleys of teargas fired into the mosque, live rounds used, special police units waited at the entrance, inside chaos.
The first barricade was breached. The security forces inside but the ground floor still wasn't secure. the entrance to the stairs leaving to the mosque's * is still blocked,but outside the army has exchanged fire with at least one gun man hiding in the tower. Reports suggest that triggered the assault in the mosque.
Awared that the world is watching, state TV put on a caption in English, saying Egypt fights terrorism, and put on Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi. He took a tough line.
-There is no reconciliation with those who have blood on their hands, no reconciliation with those who have weapons.
In this devided country, there is support for that stance. As some of the Muslim Brotherhood supporters were led away, local people tried to attack them. Security officials had to step in. The Prime Minister is now talking about banning the Muslim Brotherhood. The new government and army appeared to have won this round. But driving Egypt's biggest social movement underground risks driving some of its most radical supporters into the arms of the jihadists
