But first, six years ago, Iranian exile Hamid Ghassemi-Shall left his wife Antonella at home in Canada and went off to visit his sick mother in Tehran. It was five years of hard campaigning before Antonella saw him again. Much of that time he'd been in Iran's notorious Evin prison in solitary confinement and facing imminent execution over claims that he'd helped his older brother Alborz to spy for a dissident group. No evidence for that was ever produced. Tragically, Alborz died while he was in prison - officials say from cancer, but Hamid believes his brother was beaten to death. When I spoke to the couple on the line from Toronto, Antonella told me how she found out that Hamid had been arrested.
I heard from Hamid's sister who called me that very night that Hamid did not return home and she suspected that he had been detained. Immediately I felt that this was not good news, that this was not just a mere interrogation or scare tactic. I immediately felt that this was a witch-hunt and that Hamid was gonna pay a high price.
You must have been very frightened. I was terrified and I knew that I was in for the fight of my life.
