A Hard Day's Night, an exuberantly peculiar film in which the Beatles flirt with schoolgirls, hang out with Wilfrid Brambell and discombobulate old men like some gentler version of the droogs from A Clockwork Orange. And it was made half a century ago, though its veteran director Richard Lester is ageless as you hear. Lester was reunited with John, Paul, George and Ringo on Help! but there should have been a third picture up against it, a baroque fantasy that cast the Beatles as anarchists and polygamists in the script by the playwright Joe Orton. First, Richard told me about his initial exposure to the madness. That was Beatlemania.
