麦当劳川香酱“回国”遇冷:味道很一般?

McDonald’s originally released its Sichuan dipping sauce as part of a tie-in promotion during the release of Disney’s “Mulan” back in 1998, but it quietly disappeared from the menu shortly afterward. Then, around April 2017, interest in the sauce piqued after a character on Cartoon Network’s “Rick and Morty” cartoon series professed his love for the discontinued sauce, and cited it as the impetus for all his time-traveling actions.

McDonald’s later announced that the cult-favorite dipping sauce would be available for one day only-Oct. 7, 2017-at participating locations. However, McDonald’s neglected to mention that each location would only have a very limited number of sauce packets.

Rick and Morty fans swarmed to those locations, only to find that each restaurant had only 20 to 40 sauce packets and 10 special-edition posters. The diehard fans, some of whom had shown up at the locations as early as 4 a.m., were furious at McDonald’s. In some cases, the patrons became rowdy after learning of the shortage, and police were called to the restaurants to disperse crowds.

Business Insider taste testers described the Sichuan sauce as a mix of classic suburban, American-Chinese restaurants’ sweet-and-sour chicken with some soy sauce and a hint of sesame. All in all, it was fine-but nothing special.

Part of the problem is that Szechuan sauce doesn’t resemble the cuisine of the region it is named for. Sichuan (the accepted spelling of the province) is known for extremely spicy food -- and this sauce isn’t.

Rick and Morty’s fanbase is considerably smaller in China than it is in the United States, which may provide one explanation into how utterly confounded people are that this sauce has caused mass rioting in the States.

A spokesperson for McDonald’s China confirmed that the sauce’s ingredient makeup is the same in China as it is in the United States.
