Hello, I'm Melissa Long here at the cnn center in Atlanta with a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
Church bells from around the country tolled in memory of the victims of Monday's massacre at Virginia Tech. Today is the official day of mourning in Virginia. And across America communities are being urged to honor Virginia Tech's dead and wounded, while experts continue to pore over gunman Cho Seung-Hui's writings and video. 32 people were killed in his shooting rampage on Monday.
A federal mine official says workers have found the body of one of the two missing miners at an open-pit coal-mine in Western Maryland. The two were buried in a wall collapse on Tuesday. The official says the body was found in a backhoe the man was operating when the high wall gave away. There is no information yet on the other missing miner who was using a bulldozer.
A Tennessee preacher's wife has been convicted of voluntary manslaughter for shooting him to death. The prosecution had asked that Mary Winkler be convicted of first degree murder. She claimed her husband abused her. Winkler will be sentenced to 3 to 6 years in prison and she could be released on parole after serving less than 1/3 of that time. She will be sentenced May 18th and is free on bond until then.
New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine is still on a ventilator, but the hospital says he is less dependent on it this afternoon. The governor was seriously hurt in a crash last week. He was a passenger in an SUV going 91 miles an hour. Corzine broke a thighbone, 11 ribs, his breastbone and collarbone. He was not wearing his seat belt.
And Senator John McCain is getting some grief from some critics who he says can't take a joke. While campaigning a couple of days ago in South Carolina, he was asked the question about what to do about Iran. McCain broke into the Beach Boys' melody "Barbara Ann", but used the words "Bomb Iran" instead. The audience laughed but McCain's critics and political opponents are complaining.
