Good afternoon, I'm Melissa Long at the cnn center in Atlanta, with a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.

Iraq's government says tribal leaders, say, the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq, is dead. They say Abu Ayyub al-Masri was killed in an insurgent fighting north of Baghdad. So far neither cnn nor U.S. officials can confirm the report. Iraqi authorities have not produced the body, and a militant group in Iraq denies online that al-Masri has been killed.

The government of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has taken operational control of massive crude oil projects in his country. Mr. Chavez announces Venezuela won't do business with the World Bank or the IMF, the International Monetary Fund. It is a symbolic move since Venezuela has paid all its debts to both bodies.

The State of Virginia has closed a loophole that let Virginia Tech shooter Seung-Hui Cho buy his weapons. Governor Tim Kaine issued an executive order requiring that the names of people ordered to outpatient mental health treatment be entered into a database of people barred from buying guns.

Thousands of immigrants, many of them illegal, are flooding American streets today in the name of immigration rights. Demonstrations and rallies are taking place from Oregon to Florida. Today's event's focusing on families and how an increase in deportation is separating children from their parents. More than one million people took part in last year's May Day boycott.

Smog season begins in some areas in this May Day. The American Lung Association tells us that Los Angeles tops the list of most polluted US cities. Pittsburgh follows, that the second most terrible air quality. Other cities in the list, Detroit No. 5, Atlanta 13th, the New York Metro area, coming in 17th, and the Washington area, tied with Charleston, West Virginia at 20th.

And those are the headlines at this hour. Remember you can count on cnn to bring you the latest news any time, day or night.
