Hello and good Sunday to you, I'm Stacey Elgin at the cnn center in Atlanta. Here’s a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.

We have a winner in the French elections. The run-off between Socialist Segolene Royal and Conservative Nicolas Sarkozy has come to an end with Sarkozy as the projected winner taking 53% of the vote. Early results show Royal had 47% of the vote. Sarkozy is known for taking a harsh stance on immigration, saying France can't provide a (quote) "home for all the world's miseries." There is extra security in some areas around Paris where police have previously clashed with young people of North African origin.

"I have declared a major disaster for that community and I hope that helps. It's gonna take a long time for the community to recover. And so we will help in any way we can." President Bush frees up federal money to help the tornado-devastated town of Greensburg, Kansas. At least eight people died when a twister ripped through the town Friday night. Two others were killed elsewhere in the state. Rescue teams are back at work today looking for anyone who might be trapped in the rubble. And the National Weather Service says even more storms could be on the way.

At least 45 people died in a car bomb attack in Iraq today in Baghdad and Samarra. Thirty-three of those people were killed in an attack at a busy Baghdad market.

U.S. and the Iraqi troops conducted a predawn raid in Baghdad's Sadr City district, a stronghold of Shiite militants. They say they uncovered a bloodstained torture chamber and at least eight gunmen were killed.

Al-Qaeda's No.2 man has released a new video. Ayman al-Zawahiri says he objects to U.S. congressional efforts to withdraw US troops from Iraq. He says that would (quote) "deprive us of the opportunity to destroy the American forces which we have caught in a historic trap."

In southern Gaza, Palestinian militants attacked a UN-run school, killing a bodyguard and wounding at least six others. As the event was ending, militants detonated explosive devices and opened fire. Residents say the unidentified attackers were apparently angry that boys and girls were participating in sports events.
