Good afternoon to you, I am Cory Kessler at the cnn center in Atlanta. Here is a look at what’s happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
Our top story this hour. Federal agents say they’ve uncovered an alleged terror plot aimed at fuel lines at the ground operations of New York’s JFK airport. A former cargo worker at the airport is among at least four suspects who have been arrested. A law enforcement official tells cnn the suspects are (quote)“Al-Qaeda wannabes”.
Tens of thousands of demonstrators are in the streets of Rostock, Germany protesting the upcoming Group of 8 summit. 146 police have been injured, 25 of them seriously. 17 demonstrators have been arrested. Outnumbered riot police have their hands full trying to keep things peaceful. Protestors have attacked police cars with rocks, paint bombs, and bottles. A hotel where a U.S. delegation is expected to stay also was attacked.
There is no word yet on whether a U.S. destroyer hit an intended Al-Qaeda target in Somalia. Sources say the attack on a suspected operative was launched yesterday by a U.S. navy destroyer deployed off the northern coast of Somalia. Sources tell cnn U.S. officials believed the target was involved in the attacks on U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998. AP quotes a regional governor saying a U.S. ship fired Friday on a base in a remote mountainous village where militants had arrived two days before.
Well, did he or didn’t he get married in Greece? TB patient Andrew Speaker, the man at the center of bizarre controversy says he did marry his fiancee in a small Greek town but the mayor of the town where the ceremony supposedly took place says it never happened. A member of his family provided cnn with a wedding photo hoping to prove the ceremony did take place. Speaker went public for the first time apologizing for making trans-Atlantic flights while infected with a dangerous form of tuberculosis. In an interview with ABC’s Diane Sawyer, Speaker says health officials never warned him he be a risk to fellow passengers. Speaker claims they only told him that after he was in Europe.
In Florida, tropical storm Barry was downgraded to a tropical depression after it made landfall in north of Tampa earlier today. Barry is dumping much needed rain on the state but officials warn it could trigger tornadoes.
