Hello, I'm Melissa Long here at the cnn Center in Atlanta. Here is a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
Wearing a blue cardigan sweater and a broad smile, assisted suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian was released on parole from a Michigan prison. He has spent the last eight years in prison for second degree murder. In 1998, Kevorkian was convicted of giving a lethal dose of drugs to a man who was suffering from Lou Gehrig's disease. Kevorkian said the act was part of his mission to legalize assisted suicides because he says he still supports but he says he won't assist any more suicides.
Top White House aide Dan Bartlett says he will leave the administration about a month. He's the longest serving aide to the president and is considered one of the most trusted advisors. President Bush issued a statement on the announcement. It said in part, "Since coming to work for me 14 years ago as I prepared to run for governor, Dan has become a husband and father. I understand his decision to make his young family his first priority."
Lebanese army is embroiled in a major resolve on a suspected Palestinian refugee camp. Dozens of Islamic militants linked to al-Qaeda are believed to be holed up there. The two sides have been fighting for about two weeks now. This is the worst internal fighting in Lebanon since the end of that country's civil war in 1990.
A video released this morning shows a BBC reporter kidnapped by Palestinian militants in good health. In that video, Alan Johnston says he's been treated well. Now cnn cannot independently verify the authenticity of this tape and does not know when it was recorded. Johnston was kidnapped in Gaza about three months ago now. His captors have tried to trade him for a Palestinian cleric with ties to al-Qaeda.
The State Department is telling Americans "Don't go to Venezuela". Officials say ongoing demonstrations there pose a serious danger to visitors. Riot police are out in force, using tear gas, water cannons and plastic bullets to break up the crowds. Protestors are angry after Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez shut down an opposition television station. Police say one person has been killed.
And those are the headlines at this hour. For more on these stories or other news of the day, remember cnn is your source whether you're surfing the web, watching television or on the go with your cellphone.
