Hello, I am Melissa Long here at the cnn center in Atlanta with a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
cnn has learned the name of the man at the center of that current tuberculosis scare. He is an attorney from Atlanta, Andrew Speaker. Speaker is now in Denver being treated for a rare drug resistant form of tuberculosis. Doctors there said Speaker is fine. He will undergo additional testing and exams to determine the severity of his infection and possibly how he contracted it.
The case of this TB traveler is raising concerns about the nation’s disease protection system and other security measures. The government is now investigating how Andrew Speaker managed to elude border guards even though his name was on the no fly list. Specials say it shows how vulnerable the nation is to killer germs carried by travelers.
Fred Thompson is one step closer to a run for the White House. He quitted his acting job at “Law and Order” so he can start raising money and hiring campaign staff. Thompson is a former Republican Senator from Tennessee who’s dabbled in acting through the years. A recent cnn poll of registered Republican voters suggests that Thompson stands third among potential candidates.
New numbers released by the Commerce Department show growth of the American economy is at its worst rate in more than three years. The economy grew 0.6 percent in the first quarter of the year. The Commerce Department blames the poor showing on the trade deficits and also on cutbacks the amount of businesses invested in supplying and maintaining inventories. Both Fed, chairman Ben Bernanke and President Bush say the numbers do not mean the U.S. is headed toward a recession.
Northwest Airlines is out of bankruptcy protection today. The carrier has been reorganizing for a little over a year and a half now. And it’s knocked nearly 2.5 billion dollars off its annual cost. With Northwest, no one is clear this will be the first time in nearly five years that a major U.S. airline has not been in bankruptcy.
