Very good Wednesday afternoon to you, I’m Veronica De La Cruz at the cnn center in Atlanta. Let’s take a look at what’s happening right NOW IN THE NEWS.

Several thousand Turkish troops cross into northern Iraq today to chase Kurdish guerrillas who allegedly operate from bases there. According to Turkish security officials, the raid was limited in scope and did not constitute the kind of large incursion that Turkish leaders have been discussing in recent weeks. We’re gonna keep you up-to-date here on cnn Pipeline as we get more on this developing story.

A new rift between the U.S. and Russia is the focus of attention as world leaders gather for the G8 summit in Germany. President Bush is trying to calm Russian fears about his plans to build a missile-defense system in Eastern Europe. Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused the U.S. of starting a new arm race and threatened to retarget Russian missiles on Europe in response to the U.S.

The tuberculosis incident that triggered a global health alert last week is now the focus of Congressional hearings. Andrew Speaker, the man at the center of the TB scare, spoke to Senate lawmakers by telephone from his hospital in Denver. The House Homeland Security Committee is trying to learn how Speaker was able to slip back into the U.S. from Canada even though his name was on a security watch list.

Tens of thousands of people on the Arabian Peninsula are on the way out. Oil prices are on the way up, all because of an approaching tropical storm. Cyclone Gonu is heading for the coast of Oman near the Strait of Hormuz. Oman suspended oil exports and shut down a major port ahead of the storm. The Strait of Hormuz is the key shipping route for Persian Gulf oil.

General Mills says that is raising cereal prices as of June 25th. The maker of Total, Cheerios, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Wheaties and other breakfast staples says the hikes will help make up for higher energy prices and rising costs of wheat, oats, and corn. Despite this price hike, consumers might actually see lower prices per box at the grocery store. That’s because the company is reducing the size of some boxes.

And those are your headlines at this hour. For more on any of these stories as well as other news of the day, don’t forget that cnn is always your source online, on television or even when you’re on the go.
