Hello and good Friday to you from the cnn center in Atlanta. Thanks so much for joining us. I'm Stacey Elgin. Here's a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
Paris Hilton is on her way back to the courtroom and possibly back to jail. Yesterday the Los Angeles Sheriff's Office released her because of an undisclosed medical condition. Well today a judge will decide whether she'll have to return to jail to serve out her sentence for violating probation. She was to serve 23 days after her punishment was cut from 45 days. She was reassigned to house arrest after only spending three days in jail.
Mary Winkler is being sentenced today. She's the woman who shot to death her minister husband as he lay in bed. A jury rejected the charge of first-degree murder and instead found her guilty of manslaughter. Winkler testified that her husband had physically and emotionally abused her. She faces up to six years in prison.
The G8 summit ended today with agreements to improve the environment and to help fight AIDS in Africa. The eight major industrialized nations pledged 60 billion dollars to the anti-AIDS effort. And that money will also be used to fight other diseases as well. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said summit members also made headway on climate change by promising to consider reducing greenhouse gases in half by the year 2050.
And this is what Cyclone Gonu left behind in Oman. At least 35 people were killed and 30 others are still missing. Heavy rains from the cyclone turned streets into turbulent rivers, uprooted trees and severed power lines.
Weather apparently won't be a problem for NASA's first space shuttle mission of the year. Atlantis is set to blast off from the Kennedy Space Center this evening with seven astronauts onboard. It's an 11-day mission to deliver energy producing solar panels to the International Space Station. Now this flight was scrubbed back in February because a hailstorm damaged the insulating foam on the shuttle's external tank.
