Good afternoon to you, I'm Cory Kessler at the cnn center in Atlanta. Here is a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
A raid by U.S. troops on a Shiite militia office in Baghdad escalated into five hours of street fighting. At least three people were killed, an Iraqi government source says the fighting started after U.S. troops opened fire on a car approaching the office. In a separate incident at least 15 people are dead after a suicide bomber crashed into a police station near Tikrit. More than 45 others were wounded, police officials there said.
Israel launched at least two overnight air strikes against targets in Gaza City. The Israeli military confirms the raids saying it targeted an Islamic Jihad building and weapons warehouse. Palestinian sources claim there were three air strikes including attacks on a dairy warehouse and a workshop.
President Bush is now in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia after a visit to Albania. They're the last two stops on his European tour. And because both countries are strong U.S. allies, it's an upbeat way for Mr. Bush to end his journey. While the president was in Albania, he thanked leaders for deploying troops to Afghanistan and Iraq.
As vast population's age, it's predicted 1 in 85 people worldwide will have Alzheimer's disease 40 years from now. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University are presenting a new study at a conference in Washington today. The public health specialist who led the study says the brain-destroying disease could have a major global impact unless scientists can prevent or delay its progression. The research was funded by two major drug companies.
