From the cnn center in Atlanta I'm Nicole Lapin. Here's a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.

The US Senate has blocked the compromise immigration bill backed by President Bush. The move will likely postpone any action on immigration until after the 2008 elections. Critics argue that the bill gave illegal immigrants amnesty.

Meanwhile President Bush is trying to rally support for intensified military operations in Iraq that he calls "The Surge". The president says the strategy is working in places like Anbar Province. He also hopes to duplicate that success elsewhere. He also said that the sacs are quite high as Iraq is the central battleground to the war against Islamic extremists.

Meanwhile a car bomb has exploded at a Baghdad bus station, killing at least twenty-two people in the worst of several attacks all across Iraq. South of the capital, police say they found twenty beheaded bodies on the banks of the Tigris river.

Meanwhile the US Food And Drug Administration is cracking down on fish imported from China--catfish, eel, basa, dace, shrimp all being blocked due to possible contamination from medications used on fish farms there.

Now they are flying quite high and for good reason. The US national symbol, the bald eagle has been taken off the endangered species list. In 1963, there were only 417 documented eagles in 48 US states. Well now, there are nearly ten thousand mating pairs of bald eagles all across the nation. President Bush hailed the news, saying it is a wonderful way to celebrate the forth of July, Independence Day.

And those are the headlines at this hour. For more on these stories and other news of the day, cnn is always your source whether you are watching online, watching on TV, or watching on your cellphone. Thanks so much for watching.
