A final goodbye for a former first Lady. A procession carried the body of Lady Bird Johnson to her final resting place next to her husband on the LBJ Ranch. She died Wednesday at the age of 94.
In Baghdad, police reported a large car bomb exploded near the heavily fortified Green Zone. The explosion rocked Hussein Square, in the area of cafes and shops in the central city. Ten people are reported dead; another 25 wounded.
The Senate is set to resume debate on the war in Iraq tomorrow. On deck is a discussion about a Democratic amendment to a defense spending bill. That amendment would mandate a timetable for the withdrawal of troops. President Bush has vowed to veto any bill that includes a timetable. Also up for discussion, a Republican amendment calling on the president to devise a new strategy for Iraq that includes scaling back the number of troops.
Two men arrested in connection with the failed car bombings in Britain have been released without charge. The detention of a third man is being extended. So far, three doctors have been charged in last month's attempted bombings.
A statement is expected today from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles. A lawyer says the Archdiocese has agreed to pay 660 million dollars to settle suits stemming from the priest sexual abuse scandal.
Despite the blistering summer heat, it's snowing in Phoenix, Arizona. How about that? Well, sort of. The Phoenix Zoo has snow trucked in to help both animals and visitors stay cool. And for playful kids, the welcome white stuff quickly became the main attraction. The zoo's "Winter in July", as it's called, featured tons of snow activities for young and old. And zoo workers served cool treats to the animals. They did love that.
