In Utah, rescue workers are trying to reach 6 coal miners who are unaccounted for after a cave-in there. Officials say they have had no communication with those miners. The Emery County Sheriff's Department says that the collapse happened at the Genwal Resources coal mine in Huntington Canyon. That collapse occurred in an hour after what was reported to be a magnitude 4.0 earthquake just before 3 am local time. Two inspectors are trying to figure out what's going on. They are inspecting the site and trying to determine what happened.
A bond hearing set for this afternoon for two men arrested near Charleston, South Carolina, yesterday with suspicious materials in their car. Authorities have charged Yousef Megahed and Ahmed Mohamed with possessing and transporting incendiary or explosive materials. Neither is a US citizen. Police searched the car and found what appeared to be explosive type materials. One item was detonated at the scene. A terrorism task force is reviewing the evidence now. Authorities are not definitively saying that the evidence was bomb-making materials.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai says that his country's still suffering in the wake of the Taliban’s rule. But he says that thanks to the help of the US, the situation is better. This morning, he met with President Bush at Camp David and the two talked about a host of issues including curtailing the country’s opium production and also the fight against Al-Qaeda and the Taliban.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy may be enjoying his American vacation. But he is not loving the American press. You can see he got into a bit of confrontation yesterday with two news photographers on the New Hampshire Lake. The photographers say Sarkozy saw them taking photographers, jumped on their boat and started yelling in French. After they promised to stop shooting, they say that he calmed down and then he left. Earlier yesterday, Sarkozy asked the media to go home and let him enjoy his holiday in peace.
An Israeli boy who spent 6 hours floating alone at sea is now safe. Rescuers say they found the 8-year-old about 2 miles from a shore in the Dead Sea Friday. He was dehydrated and scared but otherwise alright. Police say that he was swept away during a family trip but his father didn't notice he was missing until it was dark. The Dead Sea has an extremely high salt concentration so it's easy to stay afloat.
