The jury has reached a verdict in the trial of Jose Padilla, the terrorist suspect once accused of plotting to build a dirty bomb. It will be read at approximately 2:00 p.m. Eastern. Jurors began deliberations yesterday after hearing 3 months of testimony. Podilla, an American citizen and his co-defendants are being tried on several charges. They include providing support to terrorist and conspiring to murder and kidnap people overseas. They face life in prison if convicted.
Crews working to reach 6 miners trapped in Utah's Crandall Canyon mine are drilling a 4th hole in hopes of finding the men. Rescuers are drilling near where noises were picked up yesterday from inside the mine. Rescuers have been trying to find any sign of life ever since the mine collapsed on August 6th.
A frantic search under way right now in Peru. Rescuers are looking for possible survivors of a major earthquake. The Health Ministry reports at least 337 people killed, more than 1300 injured. The State Department says at least one American is among the dead. The magnitude of the quake has been upgraded from 7.9 to an 8th.
And double trouble on the weather front to tell you about we are tracking two storms. Heavy rains are pounding parts of Texas right now. And New York where was tropical storm Erin now a tropical depression. The threat of flooding is a big concern with the soil saturated after a heavy, heavy rains of the summer. The National Guard is standing by along with the water rescue teams. Also this, Dean, the first hurricane at the 2007 Atlantic season, intensifying in the Caribbean. We are gonna keep a close eye on both for you.
And crews have found more human remains in the collapse of a Minneapolis bridge. Two more sets of remains have been pulled from vehicles that plunged into the Mississippi River. The I-35W Bridge fell on August 1st. The county medical examiner is working to identify the remains and notify families .Before the latest find nine bodies have been recovered and 6 are still listed as missing.
