Good afternoon on this Saturday. I'm Cory Kessler at the cnn.com newsroom in Atlanta. Here's a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
A deadly storm is churning in the Caribbean. Hurricane Dean is a powerful category 4 storm and it's on a collision course with Jamaica. Hurricane warnings are in place there and forecasters say Dean could strengthen to category 5 today. At least three deaths are already blamed on the storm as it slammed the islands of St. Lucia, Martinique and Dominica. It caused floods, damaged homes, downed power lines and destroyed crops. Gulf coast communities are also preparing for Dean, even though forecasters say it's too soon to tell whether the storm will eventually strike the US.
Well, there is no weather in space. But Dean is prompting NASA to cut short today's spacewalk. Two astronauts ventured outside the shuttle today. They are adding news parts to the International Space Station. NASA plans to bring Endeavour home Tuesday which will be a day early if Dean veers towards Houston. The Mission Control Team would relocate to Cape Canaveral in Florida if that happens.
Police have two more suspects in custody in that deadly schoolyard shooting in Newark, New Jersey from two weeks ago. Authorities have arrested the two last night in the Washington area. One of the suspects is Rodolfo Godinez who authorities have described as a major player in the case. Five people are now under arrest and police are looking for a sixth suspect. In the August 4th shootings, three college students were gunned down execution-style. Another student survived the attack. Authorities have said robbery appears to have been the motive.
Reverend Billy Graham is in the hospital today. Doctors in Asheville, North Carolina say the evangelist has intestinal bleeding but they add his condition does not appear to be life-threatening. Graham, now 88 and frail with Parkinson's disease, has counseled 11 American presidents. He turned his ministry over to his son Franklin in 2000.
And the man who choreographed Ronald Reagan's public image is dead of cancer. Michael Deaver started working with Reagan shortly after Reagan was elected California governor in 1966. Deaver was known for having a knack for lighting, camera angles and backdrops. In an interview, he said the only thing he did was “light the president well.” Michael Deaver was 69.
