Good afternoon, I'm Melissa Long here at the cnn center in Atlanta with a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.

Tropical Storm Humberto has turned into a hurricane and blew into southeastern Texas this morning. The intensity caught many forecasters and local officials by surprise. Humberto made landfall just north of Galveston overnight with 85-mile-an-hour winds. It is now back to tropical storm. It could dump more than a foot of rain over parts of Texas and Louisiana.

And Louisiana is under a state of emergency as Humberto is moving through. A warning area includes a parish hit by Hurricane Rita two years ago.

A tsunami alert has been issued for Indonesia. Indonesia is already reeling from four strong earthquakes that struck within 24 hours. The latest jolt/, measuring 6.2, rattled the Pacific side of Indonesia earlier today. At least nine people were killed by Wednesday's 8.4 quake off Sumatra. It's sparking horrifying memories of the 2004 earthquake and tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people in that region.

The Pentagon says an assassinated Sunni leader has ignited a movement that will outlive him. A roadside bombing killed Sheik Abdul Sattar Abu Reesha and at least two of his bodyguards near his home in Ramadi today. He had united with US forces against al-Qaeda militants in Anbar province.

Two police officers were injured in a shooting at an apartment complex in South Florida today. Local media reports that the shooting was in the same area where a person was barricaded in Cutler Bay. Right now, police are searching for at least one armed suspect possibly driving a white Honda Civic. The officers have been taken to the hospital.

President Bush is preparing to address the nation tonight. The president is expected to endorse the recommendations of General David Petraeous and Ambassador Ryan Crocker, the US ambassador to Iraq, which includes a limited drawdown of US troops in Iraq. The White House says Democrats are ignoring the progress made in Iraq since the recent buildup of US troops. Democrats say the White House is trying to preserve the status quo.

And those are the headlines for you on this Thursday, September 13th. Do stay with cnn for more on these stories or other news of the day.
