Good afternoon, I'm Melissa Long here at the cnn centre in Atlanta with a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.

Las Vegas police have questioned O. J. Simpson in connection to an alleged theft. cnn affiliate KVBC says the incident took place at the Palace Station Casino. The Associated Press reports the theft involved sports memorabilia. Simpson was questioned and then released.

In Florida, Miami-Dade police say they don't yet know a motive behind yesterday's fatal police shooting. Just before midnight an intense manhunt ended in gunfire at an apartment complex. Officers shot and killed the man who was suspected of shooting four officers and killing one of them earlier in the day. The suspect identified as 25-year-old Shawn Labeet. Police say Labeet shot the officers after they stopped him earlier for driving erratically.

The White House says Iraq's leaders are making very limited progress on the mandatory benchmarks set by Congress. That assessment is a part of a new report released today. The report says that one area of improvements since July is the so-called de-baathification that involves allowing former members of Saddam Hussein's Baath Party to hold government position.

President Bush will accept the nominations of his top commander in Iraq. In a televised speech last night, the president said US troop levels in Iraq should return to the pre-surge levels by next summer. In their response, Democrats say the president's plan will just return troop levels to where they were in January. They are pushing for bigger faster troop reductions.

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick is taking full responsibility for the spying scandal that is shaking his football team and the NFL. And he is making it clear he has nothing more to say about it. The spying involved a Patriots' employee was caught video-taping signals being used by the New York Jets coaches in Sunday's game. The NFL fined Belichick half a million dollars. In a news conference earlier today Belichick tried repeatedly to shift discussion to this weekend's game.
