Hello, and good Tuesday to you from the cnn center in Atlanta, I’m Stacey Elgin. Here's a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
It wasn't so long ago Libya was on the receiving end of UN Security Council sanctions. Well, now the former rogue state gets to help decide who should be slapped with sanctions after winning one of the non-permanent seats on the 15-nation body. The US didn't oppose the election of Libya which has renounced nuclear weapons and support for terrorism. Victims though, of the 1988 Pan Am bombing say it's an outrage.
Authorities are evacuating anyone within a quarter-mile of an automotive plant in Melvindale, Detroit. There has been a chemical spill at the plant. Officials say more than 3000 gallons of hydrochloric acid leaked onto the roof of the plant. The spill was contained but it's raining so environmental authorities are worried about clouds of acid forming. Hydrochloric acid is highly corrosive. So far, there has been no sign of the acid in the air.
A suspected child molester will make his first court appearance tomorrow. A ten-day nationwide search for Chester Arthur Stiles ended last night. Stiles is accused of sexually assaulting a toddler on videotape. Police arrested him during a traffic stop in Henderson, Nevada. The arresting officer became suspicious when Stiles gave him an expired California driver's license. He is also wanted on state and federal charges alleging him molested a 6-year-old girl in 2003.
Police in Thailand say 32-year-old Christopher Paul Neil of Canada is the suspected pedophile seen in online photos, allegedly sexually abusing young Asian boys. The International Police Organization says the man worked as an English teacher in South Korea. He's now believed to be on the run in Thailand.
A fifth Republican senator won't be seeking re-election. A spokesman for Kay Bailey Hutchison says she won't run again when her term expires in 2012. The Texas senator is thinking about running for governor. Her spokesman says she could leave her post as early as 2009. Hutchison was elected to the Senate in a special ballot in 1993.
