Hello to you. I’m Stacey Elgin at the cnn Center in Atlanta. Here’s a look at what’s happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
A major earthquake jolted northern Chile today. A tsunami warning was issued, but later cancelled. The US Geological Survey says the quake had a magnitude of 7.7. It was centered about 780 miles north of the capital city of Santiago at a depth of 37 miles. So far there are no reports of any injuries. The head of Chile’s Emergency Bureau says the quake was felt across nearly 1300 miles.
New York Governor Eliot Spitzer has withdrawn a controversial plan that would have allowed undocumented immigrants to get driver’s licenses. Spitzer introduced the plan just two months ago. He had said the goal was to bring immigrants out of the shadows, increase security and make streets more secure. Opponents argued illegal immigrants should not have the privilege of a license and that Spitzer’s plan would make it easier for would-be terrorists to get identification. The Democrat now says overwhelming public opposition let him to drop the plan.
Well, it is official retired Federal Judge Michael Muskasey was sworn in at a public ceremony as the nation’s Attorney General. He went right to work after that, meeting with top Justice Department officials and getting national security briefings. The Democratic-controlled Senate voted 53 to 40 to confirm Muskasey. He replaces Alberto Gonzales who resigned amid a beltway uproar over fired prosecutors.
You may be familiar with this Andy Warhol portrait of film icon: Elizabeth Taylor. Now the painting was sold for a whopping, get this, 23 million dollars at a Christie’s auction last night. The bidder remains anonymous but British papers say actor Hugh Grant was the seller. He reportedly bought the painting known as Liz 6 years ago for less than 4 million dollars.
A flapjack for the faithful, that’s what a Florida woman says she cooked up. Marilyn Smith says she was hungry for pancakes not a spiritual shoutout, but this is what came off the griddle on Sunday morning. She says the image looks like Jesus or maybe Moses. Smith’s daughter is seeing dollar signs in the divine. She is auctioning the pancake off on E-bay.
