Hello! And good Tuesday to you, I’m Stacey Elgin at the cnn Center in Atlanta, here now is a look at what’s happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
O.J. Simpson is in court again today to continue a hearing to decide if he and two others will be tried on a dozen criminal charges. Testimony is expected to focus on whether guns were involved in what prosecutors say was a robbery in a Las Vegas hotel. Two former co-defendants contradict Simpson’s claim that he never saw any guns or asked anyone to bring guns to the room with sports memorabilia Simpson wanted to retrieve.
About 220 people aboard a Norwegian Cruise Lines ship are recovering from a highly contagious virus that causes stomach flu. They were quarantined for 24 hours and given a $200 on-ship credit. Now the Cruise Lines says no passengers were hospitalized. The ship was on its weekly 7-day cruise around the Hawaiian Islands.
Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson is getting support from a prominent anti-abortion group. The National Right to Life Committee has announced that it’s endorsing Thompson for president. The group says the former Senator from Tennessee boasts a 100% voting record against abortion. Some conservatives have criticized Thompson for what they say are conflicting positions in the past .
The stagehands' strike on Broadway could hit shows that aren't anywhere near the Great White Way. Touring companies could be next to feel the impact of the work stoppage. Producers could lose up to a million dollars a week if stagehands stop working on traveling musicals. At least 27 Broadway productions have been shut down since stagehands walked off the job Saturday. Shows with their own contract with the union and off-Broadway shows are seeing ticket sales boom because of the strike.
And a happy ending so far for little Lakshmi. You may remember the 2-year-old Indian girl born with an extra set of limbs. Doctors say she is doing well after last week’s marathon operation to remove the superfluous arms and legs. Now so well in fact that their star patient made a brief appearance at a news conference in Bangalore along with her parents. Good news there.
