Hello and good Friday,I'm Stacey Elgin at the cnn Center in Atlanta. Here's a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
Tropical Cyclone Sidr has come and gone, leaving a trail of destruction when it slammed into Bangladesh. At least 500 people have been killed, but that number is expected to rise. The storms driving rain and high winds leveled homes, uprooted trees and destroyed crops and fish farms. The US says it's ready to help in relief efforts by sending three warships to the coast of Bangladesh.
The Reverend Al Sharpton is leading a march today in Washington. He says it's an effort to persuade the Justice Department to do more about hate crimes. The participants did not feel it has prosecuted enough cases. The department says the number of hate crimes has dropped which explains the lower amount of cases. A number of recent high-profile incidents including the Jena 6 case in Louisiana. Since then, a number of incidents involving nooses have been reported.
The Senate blocked GOP and Democratic war spending bills. The Republican version would have given 70 billion dollars for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars without strings attached. And the Democrats had pushed a 50-billion-dollar bill. It would have required troops to start returning home at the end of next year. The Democratic bill faced a presidential veto if it had passed.
North Korea was the centerpiece of talks today between President Bush and Japan's new Prime Minister.Yasuo Fukuda is making his first visit to the US as Prime Minister. The two discussed Japan's future contribution to the war on terror. Japan has warned that relations could suffer if the US removes North Korea from the terrorist blacklist as it agreed to in February. Tokyo wants Pyongyang to account for kidnapped Japanese citizens.
Barry Bonds's legacy and his freedom are now in jeopardy. Baseball's home run king was indicted on five felony counts of perjury and obstruction of justice. He now faces up to 30 years in prison. Federal prosecutors accused Bonds of using steroids and lying to a grand jury about it during an investigation into the use of the performance-enhancing drugs in pro sports.
