From the cnn Center in Atlanta, I’m Nicole Lapin. Happy Thanksgiving to you if you’re celebrating. Here is a look at what’s happening right NOW IN THE NEWS.
The suspected Al-Qaeda fighters killed three Iraqi soldiers early this morning south of Baghdad. Iraqi police say that the attackers then commandeered two Humvees and then used them to ambush a Sunni enclave. At least 15 people were killed there. At the same time in Baquba, police also say that Iraqi security forces killed 19 Al-Qaeda fighters. Also today, a series of mortars landed inside Baghdad's heavily-fortified Green Zone during Thanksgiving Day celebrations by American troops. Thankfully, no reports of any injuries there.
Natalee Holloway's family members are hoping that they're one step closer to finding out exactly what happened two and a half years ago in Aruba. The three young men who were suspects in her disappearance then have been arrested yet again. Prosecutors are announcing that they actually have some new evidence tying these men to her death. Suspect Joran van der Sloot is due in court in Netherlands today. Also the two other suspects, Satish and Deepak Kalpoe, are expected to be before judge in Aruba tomorrow. Natalee Holloway has been missing since May of 2005.
The FBI now is joining in on the search for a Mississippi college student who vanished more than a week ago. Latasha Norman was last seen on November 13th after a class at Jackson State University. Authorities say that Norman filed police reports after someone had slashed the tires on her car. Then an ex-boyfriend now accused of hitting her. Police say that they've received dozens of calls on the case. But so far, nothing has actually panned out and they have no suspect.
Pakistan's military ruler has now been clear to become a civilian president. This is a move that's been orchestrated by General Pervez Musharraf himself. Pakistan's high court justices whom he recently put in place himself dismissed the final challenge to Musharraf’s re-election. A stepping down as general could really help Mr. Musharraf blunt criticism go away after a decision to impose a state of emergency earlier this month.
The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade kicked off with unusually balmy weather today. Shrek, there it is, was one of the new three balloons unveiled this year. Er, today is the 81st year that the parade rolled through Manhattan. Ten thousand people, half of them by the way, Macy’s employees, participated in the festivities. The lineup included two dozen cheerleaders, 800 clowns,11 marching bands, and of course, those Rockettes. Organizers estimate that three million people turned out this year to see Santa kick off the year's holiday season.
And Thanksgiving is a day to feast with the family but you can also indulge in some shopping. Some stores like BJ’s Wholesale, CompUSA are all opened today, hoping to kick off the Black Friday promotions online today.
And those are the headlines at this hour. For more on these stories and other news of the day, cnn is always your place to turn. Happy Thanksgiving!
