Hello, I'm Melissa Long here at the cnn Center in Atlanta with a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS on this Wednesday.
With Turkey Day upon us, millions are heading the sky, the rails and the roads today. The weather in the Midwest, however, may throw a monkey wrench in your travel plans. Flight delays averaged about 90 minutes at Chicago's O'Hare Airport last night. New York area airports are expecting almost 3500 flights today. Even the President is pushing for you to fly on time. He is opening some military airspace to commercial flights. This so-called Thanksgiving express lane debuts today.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will host a Middle East peace summit next Tuesday in Maryland. State Department officials say it will launch a new push toward resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The White House says President Bush will meet with the Palestinian authority's president and Israel's Prime Minister before and after the summit.
A fast moving wildfire is chasing some residents from their homes in New Mexico's Manzano Mountain which is south of Albuquerque. The Ojo Peak fire has burned at least one home and high winds are spreading the flames quickly. Dozens of force service firefighters and volunteer firefighters are working the fire lines. Officials say blaze like this, this time of year is unusual. Evacuees have been sent to a high school where the Red Cross is running a shelter.
And if you have to be driving for the holiday, it is going to be expensive. AAA says the national average for gas is about three dollars and nine cents a gallon. That is almost 85 cents higher than last year at this time. Meantime, crude oil reached a new record overnight. It topped 99 bucks a barrel in Asia.
And British scientists say they've discovered the remains of an ancient sea scorpion that was eight feet long. Compare that creature to the average human, it is the biggest bug ever found that lived some 390 million years ago. Scientists have known that creepy crawling insects used to be much bigger, but not this big. And that's amazing, 8 feet long.
Those are the headlines for you at this hour. Do stay with cnn for more on those stories or other news of the day.
