Officials in southern California say as many as 35 homes have been destroyed in the wildfire near Malibu. It started in the hills above the city around 3: 30 this morning and has already grown to more than 2200 acres. Mandatory evacuations continue. Meanwhile, the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
A third suspect who was rearrested in the 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway is now in jail in Aruba. 20-year-old Joran van der Sloot arrived last night on a flight from the Netherlands where he attends college. Two brothers Deepak and Satish Kalpoe were rearrested Wednesday and are being questioned.
A university president accused of financial misconduct calls it quits. Richard Roberts's resignation as President of Oral Roberts University is effective immediately. Roberts faces several lawsuits and is accused of using the school's money to support a lavish lifestyle. Roberts and his wife have denied any wrongdoing.
Former chess champion Garry Kasparov is among several opposition protestors who will be detained after an anti-Kremlin rally in Moscow. Kasparov and one of his bodyguards were grabbed by riot police and forced into a police bus. His assistant says Kasparov was forced to the ground and beaten. The protest comes a week ahead of legislative elections.
Talks in the ongoing entertainment writers' strike are just about ready to start up again. Negotiators from the studios and the Writers Guild are set to meet on Monday. The writers went on strike three weeks ago. The main part of the dispute is over proceeds from new media like Internet episodes and reruns.
