So glad you're with us, everyone. I’m Catherine Callaway at the cnn Center in Atlanta with a look at what’s happening NOW IN THE NEWS.

Washington Redskin's safety Sean Taylor is in critical condition at a Miami hospital after being shot this morning. Authorities say the 24-year-old safety was shot in his leg and has lost a lot of blood. The shooting happened at Taylor’s Miami home. Police are interviewing witnesses and they say the gunshot didn’t seem to be self-inflicted. This is Taylor’s fourth year in the league since being drafted from the University of Miami.

Senator Trent Lott of Mississippi is calling it quits. He is the sixth Republican this year to announce his leaving the Senate. He may remember five years ago, he was ousted as the party's senate leader over remarks that he made at retiring Senator Strom Thurmond's 100th birthday. Republican Mississippi governor Haley Barbour will appoint someone to hold Lott's seat until a special election next year.

President Bush says he's optimistic about the chances for Middle East peace. He met with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert at the White House ahead of Tuesday’s peace summit. Skepticism is running high in many corners that any real results can be achieved. President Bush and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert say they are both optimistic.

And Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf is set to step down as army chief before being sworn in for another term Thursday. Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif back from exile now, filed the necessary election papers to run in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

And Spanish police say this man killed his ex-girlfriend after she rejected his marriage proposal on a television talk show. The man made a surprised appearance on the show. She had taken out a restraining order against him after years of beatings.
