Hello, I'm Melissa Long here at the cnn Center in Atlanta on this Wednesday December 12, here is a look at some of the stories that are happening Now In The News.
Powerful explosions one after the other , planted by insurgents, targeting civilians in Iraq today. Three car bombs and one roadside bomb ripped through the predominantly Shiite city of Amarah. The Interior Ministry confirms at least 27 people are dead with 150 wounded. Rival Shiite factions have been battling for control of this suburban region.
Political violence is escalating in Lebanon. A top ranking army general and at least 3 others were killed when a bomb exploded in a suburb of Beirut. The attacks come at the time when lawmakers are deadlocked over a new president. The general was a top candidate for army chief. The US says it strongly condemns the assassination.
Gunmen are on the run in Las Vegas, police today are looking for at least two people they say opened fire at a school bus stop. Six people were wounded. And Police say at least four were high school students. The shooting happened just as the kids were getting off the school bus. Police believed it was linked to a fight over a girl.
In northwest Oregon today, crews are busy digging out from this massive mudslide. It damaged at least four homes and covered a stretch of highway. The slide happened yesterday but the pressure had been building for a while now. And it started with a smaller slide like this a couple of days ago.
Marion Jones has been stripped of her medals. The International Olympic Committee, the IOC today wiped her name from the record books. The disgraced Olympic star had already given back her three gold and two bronze medals she won at the Sydney games. Back in October Jones admitted she used performance-enhancing drugs during her record run in 2000. The IOC banned Jones even from attending next year's Beijing Olympics.
