Hello, I am Melissa Long here at the cnn Center in Atlanta on this Thursday, December 13th. Here is a look at some of the stories that are happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
Major League baseball players are sweating it out as they await the release of a landmark report on the use of steroids. Sources say the report -- that conclusion of a 20-million-dollar investigation is 300 to 400 pages long. It was compiled by former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell who's planning on posting it online right after this afternoon's news conference.
A small plane crashed in the waters off Florida Keys today. The coastguard rescued 2 people and according to officials they were the only people in the plane. Our affiliate in Florida WFOR had aerials that spotted the remains of that small plane. There is still no word on what caused it to go down.
About a million doses of a child vaccine are being recalled. Tests showed a sterilization problem at a plant in Pennsylvania where the vaccine was made. The manufacturer Merck & Co. says it is not aware of any harm to children who receive the vaccine which prevents meningitis and pneumonia.
People in New York State, other parts (of) the northeast are stocking up an preparation for a major winter storm. The city’s salt trucks are loading up for the storm that could bring a mix of snow, sleet and rain. Some spots could get up to a foot of snow beginning today.
And watch this. Look at that picture. Japanese scientists have created that little mouse that isn’t afraid of cats. The researchers say it's genetically altered in a way that it can't pick up a certain odor. And no smell apparently equals no fear. The test cat right there, not genetically modified he was, because he's just very calm and apparently not very hungry. And I love that picture right there of the cat embracing that little mouse. That is truly straight about altering the laws of nature.
