cnn news 2013-05-16

Back from the weekend, ready to go with anew day of cnn student news. Hi, everyone I am Carl Azuz. We are going to beall over the map today. Our first up it’s in the Middle East. We reported onSyria's civil war for a while now. They have been concerns about the violencespreading to neighboring country like Turkey. This weekend, two car bombsexploded in the Turkish town. It's on the border with Syria, at least 46 peoplewere killed around hundreds of others were wounded. Turkish officials areblaming the attacks on Syria. A Syrian official says its country doesn't haveanything to do with it. The fighting in Syria has spilt over the border in theTurkey before. Turkey has increase security forces in the area and its NATOallies have installed missile defense systems there.

Let's head back now across the Atlantic toGuatemala. On Friday, a group of judges there reached a surprising verdict in avery important case. It ruled that this man, Affriahin Reals Montt, was guiltyof genocide, mass murder. Montt was a dictator who ruled Guatemala in part ofearly 1980s.  This is the first time thatany country's leader has been tried for genocide by his own judicial system. While Montt is in power more than 1700 native Mayans, descendants of theancient civilization were killed by the Guatemala military. The country'scurrent president who was a military commander under Montt denies this genocideever happened. Legal experts expect Montt to appeal his conviction.

Is this legit? The IRS sets tax rates inthe U.S. No, not true. Congress takes taxes. It's the IRS's job to collectthose taxes.

Some groups don't have to pay taxes. Forexample, organization that aren’t in business to make a profit. And in order toget tax exempt status which is what it’s called, these groups have to fill outan application and submit to other checks from the IRS. And right now, theagencies have been criticized over how it handle applications from tea partyand other conservative groups. The tea party is actually more politicalmovement that in recent election has been organized in opposition to PresidentObama. It's made up of a bunch group around the country. Members generally wantfewer taxes and less government spending. In fact, tea stands for tax enoughalready. A review of IRS practices shows that some tea party groups thatapplied for tax exempt status might have been the target of discrimination fromsome IRS agencies. The review says this might start in 2010 and officials ofIRS knew about it in 2011. What happened is that some IRS agencies search forkey words like tea party. If that showed up in the name of group, theapplication was flagged for additional review.

It contributes to the profound distrustthat the American people have in government. It is absolutely chilling that theIRS was singling out conservative groups for an extra review.

The IRS director of tax exemptorganizations admitted that agencies use those key words but she said it wasjust a short cut, not because of political bias. The White House says if anyrules were broken, this misconduct should be addressed.

The international space station has been aleaking. NASA has known about this for a while, but last week, astronautsaboard this station noticed the leaking got bigger. The orbiter has losing 5pounds of ammonia per day. This is important because ammonia is used to cool offsome of the system's electronics. NASA said it wasn't an urgent threat to thepeople aboard but it was a big deal that 2 of the 6 folks up there step out fora spacewalk on Saturday. Their mission, stop the leak. After more than 5 hours,it appeared that they had by replacing a pump mechanism but it could be weeksor even months before we know for sure if that fix the problem. NASA's hopingto use the station until at least the year 2020.
