Finally, a wink and a nod today to somemedia that matters.
First, a tragic story, a searing piece of videoand some remarkable journalism as the train derails horribly in Spain killingat least 78 people. The associate press took that video and went to work. A videoproduced advance frame by frame. The AP estimated distance between pylons, counter railway ties and used a time stamp on the video to calculate thetrain's speed. One estimate 89 to 119 miles an hour using different technique96 to 112. The posted speed limit 50 miles an hour. In less than two hours, theAP went from video to story providing vital information.
For instincts, initiate and transparent inreporting, the AP prove a reliable resource.
But another story gets us some down oncoverage, Iraq. The place looks like its imploding. Sectarian violence has beenescalating with near daily bombing and killings. Syria's civil war may bemaking things worse. And assault on Abu Ghraib prison sprung more than 200convicts connected to al-Qaeda in Iraq. But where is American news media? Mosthave gone home. The last American bureau there, cnn closed in May. They arestill producers and strings and reporters and they are doing there best, butthe big present and the sustained coverage is a fraction of what it was. Thereason U.S. troops has gone home and exorbitant cost. But this story aboutIraqi stability, regional security and America's legacy and yes oil stillmatters. It won't be easy. Americans are war-weary. The coverage needs to beabout more than bombs and bullets. But the news media need to the time, spaceand commitment to stay with this story because it is not going away. And it'sAmerican story, too.
