[00:37.69]SYNOPSIS OF ACT ONE:On a summer evening
[00:42.40]a birthday celebration is going on at Dr.Stockton’s.
[00:47.18]Among those present are his neighbors:
[00:50.57]the Hendersons,the Weiss’s and the Harlowes
[00:54.65]in the midst of it comes unexpecately over the radio
[00:58.93]the announcement of the President of the United States
[01:02.93]declaring a state of emergency for suspected enemy missiles approaching
[01:08.34]The party breaks up and the neighbors hurry home
[01:12.05]However,shortly afterwards they return one after another
[01:17.43]to the stockton house for the simple reason that they want to survive
[01:23.44]want to share with stocktons the bomb shelter
[01:27.54]which is the only one on their street
[01:30.72]ACT TWO (abridged)
[01:35.11]OUTSIDE STOCKTON HOME
[01:38.12]It’ll land any minute.I just know it.It’s going to land any minute
[01:43.50]What are we going to do?Throughout above and following dialogue
[01:49.19]a portable radio carries by one of the children
[01:52.98]carrise the following announcement:
[01:56.19]This is Conelrad.This is Conelrad.
[01:59.77]We are still in a state of Yellow Alert.
[02:02.85]If you are a public official or government employee
[02:06.85]with an emergency assignment,or a civil defense worker
[02:11.63]you should report to your post immediately.
[02:15.03]If you are a public official or government employee...
[02:18.84]Jerry, ask again.
[02:21.43]Don’t waste your time.
[02:23.73]He won’t let anyone in
[02:26.23]he said he didn’t have any room
[02:29.52]or supplies there and it’s designed for three people.
[02:33.60]What’ll we do?
[02:35.61]Maybe we ought to pick out just one baesment and go to work on it
[02:40.81]Pool all our stuff
[02:43.21]Food, water, everything
[02:46.01]It isn’t fair
[02:48.31]He’s down there in a bomb shelter completely safe
[02:52.41]And our kids have to just wait around for a bomb to drop and
[02:57.21]Let’s just go down into his basement and break down the door?
[03:01.60]A chorus of voices greet this with assent
[03:05.81]As HENDERSON rushes through toward the basement entrance
[03:10.30]HARLOWE overtakes him saying:
[03:13.20]Wait a minute, wait a minute.
[03:15.58]All of us couldn’t fit in there.
[03:18.09]That would be crazy to even try.
[03:21.09]Why don’t we draw lots?
[03:24.49]Pick out one family?
[03:26.89]What difference would it make?
[03:29.97]He won’t let us in.
[03:32.06]We can all march down there
[03:34.96]and tell him he’s got the whole street against him
[03:38.57]We could do that
[03:40.66]What good would that do?

[03:44.97]Even if we were to break down the door
[03:47.97]it couldn’t accommodate all of us
[03:50.95]We’s just be killing everybody and for no reason

[05:10.47]toward the man and there’s a brief
[05:13.05]hand-to-hand fight between them broken up by HARLOWE
[05:17.02]who stands between them breathless.
[05:19.82]Keep it up, both of you
[05:22.01]Just Keep it up.We won’t need a bomb.
[05:25.41]We can slaughter each other
[05:27.60]Marly,go down to Bill’s shelter again. Ask him
[05:32.80]I’ve already asked him.It wouldn’t do any good
[05:36.98]Once again the siren sounds
[05:40.48]and the people seem to move closer togther
[05:43.77]staring up toward the night sky
[05:46.75]Off in the distance we see searchlights
[05:50.72]Searchlights. It must be coming closer.
[05:54.40]I’m going down there and get him to open up that door
[05:58.01]I don’t care what the rest of you think
[06:00.91]That’s the only thing left to do.
[06:03.91]He’s right.Come on, let’s do it
[06:07.41]INSIDE THE SHELTER
[06:10.81]GRACE is holding tight to PAUL
[06:13.81]STOCKTON stands close to the door
[06:17.00]listening to the noises from outside as they approach
[06:21.00]There’s a pounding on the shelter door that reverberates
[06:25.28]OUTSIDE THE SHELTER
[06:28.08]Bill? Bill Stockton?
[06:31.39]You’ve got a bunch of your neingbors out here who want to stay alive
[06:35.49]Now you can open the door and talk to us
[06:38.79]and figure out with us how many can come in there.
[06:42.39]Or else you can just keep doing what you’re doing
[06:45.68]and we’ll fight our way in there.
[06:48.37]HARLOWE appears and pushes his way through the group
[06:51.77]and goes over to the shelter door.
[06:54.75]Bill,This is Jerry.
[06:58.14]They mean business out here.
[07:00.73]And I mean business in here.
[07:03.34]I’ve already told you, Jerry.
[07:05.74]You’re wasting your time.
[07:08.04]You’re wasting precious time that could be used for something else...
[07:12.64]like figuring out how you can survive.
[07:15.93]Why don’t we get a big,heavy log to break the door down?
[07:21.03]We could go over to Bennett Avenue.
[07:24.63]Phil Kline has some giant logs in his basement.
[07:28.44]I’ve seen them.Let’s get one.
[07:31.34]And we’ll just tell Kline to keep his mouth shut as to why we want it
[07:36.62]Let’s get hold of ourselves.Let’t stop and think for a minute
[07:42.81]Nobody cares what you think.
[07:45.71]You or your kind.I thought I made that clear upstairs.
[07:50.31]I think the first order of business is to get you out of here.
[07:54.10]With this he strikes out,
[07:56.37]smashing his fist into WEISS’S face
[07:59.95]in a blow so unexpected and so wild that WEISS,
[08:05.04]toatlly uNPRepared, is knocked against the wall.
[08:09.04]His wife screams and,still holding the baby,rushes to him
[08:13.64]There’s a commotion as several men try to grab the neighbor
[08:17.74]and HARLOWE is immediately at WEISS’Sside trying to help him to his feet
[08:22.94]Once again the sirens blast.
[08:26.12]Come on,let’s get something to smash this door down.
[08:30.41]Tney start out of the cellar toward the steps.
[08:35.11]INSIDE THE SHELTER
[08:37.62]STOCKTON slowly turns to face his wife
[08:41.12]The angry screaming cries of the people
[08:44.62]ring in their ears even as they depart
[08:47.80]Bill? Who were those people?
[08:52.22]"Those people?"Those are our neighbors,Grace. Our friends.
[08:57.60]The people we’ve lived with and alongside for twenty years.
[09:01.81]Come on.Paul. Let’s put stuff up against this door.
[09:06.01]Everything we can.The man and boy then start to pile up a barricade
[09:12.20]using furniture,the generator,books
[09:15.81]any movable they can get their hands on
[09:19.60]OUTSIDE OF THE SHELTER
[09:23.07]The mob marches down the street carrying a large heavy log
[09:27.95]that is perhaps fifteen feet long
[09:31.17]Their own shouts mix with the sound of the intermittent siren
[09:35.56]and with the voice of the announcer on the Conelrad station
[09:39.87]We’ve been asked to once again remind the population
[09:44.96]that they are to remain calm
[09:47.65]stay off the streets.This is urgent. Please remain off the street
[09:53.76]Everything possible is being done in the way of protection
[09:57.97]But the military and important civil defense vehicles
[10:01.76]must have the streets clear.
[10:04.55]So you’re once again reminded to remain off the streets.
[10:09.07]Remain off the streets!
[10:12.05]The minute the mob gathers before the STOCKTON house
[10:16.23]they smash into it,carrying the giant log.
[10:20.54]They move down the cellar steps.
[10:23.44]As the log smashes into the shelter door
[10:26.83]the siren goes up louder and more piercing
[10:30.73]and it is at this moment that we see both WEISS and HARLOWE
[10:35.64]join the men on the heavy log to lend their support to it.
[10:39.92]INSIDE THE SHELTER
[10:42.72]STOCKTON and PAUL lean against it as it starts
[10:47.11]to give under the weight,under the pressure.
[10:50.71]The air is filled with angry shouts,
[10:53.82]the intemittent siren, the cries of women and children
[10:58.52]INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE SHELTER
[11:02.41]And it all reaches one vast pich just as the door is forced open
[11:07.90]PAUL and STOCKTON are pushed back into the shelter
[11:11.58]and just at this moment the lights go on in the basement
[11:16.00]The siren also reaches its top and then suddenly goes off
[11:20.78]and there is absolute dead silence for a long moment
[11:25.58]Then from the portable radio in the corner comes
[11:31.17]This is Conelrad.This is Conelrad.
[11:34.75]Remain tuned for an important message Remain tuned for an important message.
[11:40.76]The President of the United States has just announced
[11:46.27]that the previously unidentified objects
[11:49.96]have now been definitey identified as being satellites.
[11:54.76]Repeat.There are no enemy missiles approaching
[11:58.76]Repeat.There are no enemy missiles approaching.
[12:02.86]The objects have been identified as satellites.
[12:06.75]They are harmless and we are in no danger.Repeat.
[12:11.25]We are in no danger.
[12:13.62]The state of emergency has offcially been called off.
[12:17.91]We are in no danger. Repeat.

[12:26.81]Thank God. Oh, thank God.
[12:30.92]Amen to that.
[12:33.01]Hi, Marty...Marty...I went crazy.
[12:38.02]You understand that, don’t you?
[12:40.50]I just went crazy.I didn’t mean all the things I said.
[12:44.79]We were all of us...we were so scared...so confused.
[12:49.78]Well,it’s no wonder realy,is it? I mean...well,
[12:53.75]you can understand why we blew our tops a little
[12:57.53]There’s a murmur of voices,a few half-hearted nods
[13:02.03]but they’re all still in a state of shock.

[13:10.13]I just hope Bill won’t hold this-against us.

[13:19.90]As STOCKTON walks past them across the cellar and up toward the stairs
[13:25.28]all eyes are on him and there’s an absolute dead silence.

[13:33.19]we could have a block party or something tomorrow night
[13:37.48]A big celebration. I think we deserve one now.
[13:41.47]He looks around smiling at the others,
[13:45.05]a nervous smile born of a carry-over of fear and the realization
[13:50.67]that something has taken hold of all of them now.
[13:54.46]Something deadening in its effect and disquieting beyound words
[14:00.25]STOCKTON takes a step up on the stairs
[14:03.86]then stops and turns back toward them
[14:07.26]His face is expressionless
[14:10.47]Block party’s not a bad idea
[14:13.45]Anything to get back to normal
[14:16.24]Normal?
[14:17.73]I don’t know.
[14:19.32]I don’t know what"normal"is.
[14:22.62]I thought I did, but I don’t any more.
[14:26.30]I told you we’d pay for the damages
[14:29.49]The damages? I wonder if we realize just what those damages are?
[14:35.57]Maybe the worst of them was finding out
[14:38.55]just what we’re like when we’re normal.

[14:54.15]that they claw their neighbors to death just for the privilege.
