[00:25.13]Every teacher probably asks himself time and again:
[00:29.28]What are the reasons for choosing teacher as a career?
[00:32.89]Do the rewards of teaching outweigh the trying moments?
[00:36.94]Answering these questions is not a simple task
[00:40.65]Let’s see what the author says.
[00:43.42]WHY I TEACH Peter G.Beidler
[00:47.65]Why do you teach?
[00:50.49]My friend asked the question
[00:52.45]when I told him that I didn’t want to be considered
[00:54.80]for an administrative position
[00:56.82]He was puzzled that I did not want what was obviously
[00:59.95]a "step up " toward what all Americans
[01:02.80]are taught to want when they grow up: money and power
[01:06.46]Certainly I don’t teach because teaching is easy for me
[01:10.74]Teaching is the most difficult of the various ways
[01:14.27]I have attempted to earn my living
[01:16.41]Mechanic, carpenter, writer
[01:19.05]For me, teaching is a red-eye, sweaty-palm, sinking-stomach profession
[01:25.60]Red-eye, because I never feel ready to teach
[01:28.74]no matter how late I stay up preparing.
[01:31.27]Sweaty-palm, because I’m always nervous before I enter the classroom
[01:36.39]sure that I will be found out for the fool that I am.
[01:39.74]Sinking-stomach, because I leave the classroom an hour later
[01:44.25]convinced that I was even more boring than usual
[01:47.28]Nor do I teach because I think I know answers
[01:51.36]or because I have knowledge I feel compelled to share
[01:54.70]Sometimes I am amazed that my students actually take notes
[01:59.17]on what I say in class!
[02:01.44]Why, then, do I teach?
[02:03.87]I teach because I like the pace of the academic calendar
[02:08.39]July, and August offer an opportunity for reflection
[02:12.83]research, and writing
[02:14.77]I teach because teaching is a profession built on change
[02:19.28]When the material is the same
[02:21.01]I change and, more important
[02:21.08]my students change
[02:22.47]I teach because I like the freedom
[02:26.62]to learn my own lessons
[02:28.45]to stimulate myself and my students
[02:31.29]As a teacher,I’m my own boss
[02:34.74]If I want my freshmen to learn to write by creating their own textbook
[02:39.08]who is to say I can’t?
[02:41.22]Such courses may be huge failures
[02:44.28]but we can all learn from failures.
[02:44.36]I teach because I like to ask questions
[02:46.81]that students must struggle to answer.
[02:49.37]The world is full of right answers to bad questions
[02:53.19]While teaching,I sometimes find good questions.
[02:57.13]I teach because I enjoy finding ways of getting myself
[03:01.57]and my students out of the ivory tower and into the real world
[03:06.40]I once taught a course called
[03:08.60]"Self-Reliance in a Technological Society."
[03:11.94]My 15 students read Emerson,Thoreau,kand Huxley.
[03:14.61]They kept diaries. They wrote term paper.
[03:18.16]But we also set up a corporation
[03:20.40]borrowed money,purchased a rundown house
[03:23.20]and practiced self-reliance by renovating it.
[03:26.41]At the end of the semester,we sold the house
[03:29.86]repaid our loan,paid our taxes
[03:32.63]and distributed the profits among the group.
[03:35.48]So teaching gives me pace, and variety
[03:39.37]and challenge, and the opportunity to keep on learning
[03:43.44]I have left out,however
[03:46.00]the most important reasons why I teach. One is Vicky
[03:50.86]My first doctoral student
[03:53.24]Vickly was an energetic student who labored at her dissertation
[03:57.42]on a little-known 14th century poet.
[04:00.79]She wrote articles and sent them off to learned journals
[04:04.84]She did it all herself, with an occasional nudge from me
[04:09.70]But I was there when she finished her dissertation
[04:12.83]learned that her articles were accepted
[04:15.58]got a job and won a fellowship to Harvard
[04:19.28]working on a book developing ideas she’d first had as my student
[04:24.25]Another season is George ,who started as an engineering student
[04:29.21]then switched to English because he decided
[04:32.37]he liked people better than things
[04:34.83]There is Jeanne,who left college
[04:38.20]but was brought back by her classmates
[04:40.52]because they wanted her to see the end of the self-reliance house project
[04:45.38]I was there when she came back
[04:47.52]I was there when she told me
[04:49.90]that she later became interested in the urban poor
[04:52.96]and went on to become a civil rights lawyer
[04:55.70]There is Jacqui,a cleaning woman who know more
[04:59.75]by intuition than most of us learn by analysis
[05:03.41]Jacqui has decided to finish high school and go to college
[05:07.85]There are the real reasons I teach
[05:10.69]these people who grow and change in front of me
[05:13.96]Being a teacher is being present at the creation
[05:17.90]when the clay begins to breathe
[05:20.49]A "promotion" out of teaching would give me money and power
[05:25.14]But I have money
[05:26.99]I get paid to do what I enjoy:reading
[05:30.73]talking with people, and asking questions like
[05:33.68]"What is the point of being rich?"
[05:36.95]And I have power.I have the power to nudge,to fan sparks
[05:42.41]to suggest books,to poing out a pathway
[05:45.88]What other power matters?
[05:48.52]But teaching offers something besides money and power
[05:52.57]it offers love
[05:54.32]Not only the love of learning and of books and ideas
[05:58.58]but also the love that a teacher feels for that
[06:01.63]rare student who walks into a teacher’s life and begins to breathe
[06:06.46]Perhaps love is the wrong word:magic might be better
[06:11.95]I teach because, being around people who are beginning to breathe
[06:16.99]I occasionally find myself catching my breath with them
