[06:11.20]How to get to the head of the class without really trying.
[06:16.69]Amanda,Marty and David are SJTU students,
[06:22.17]and they're with us tonight to discuss their approaches to academic success.
[06:28.26]Amanda,you're a straight A student,
[06:32.65]but you also make time for extra-curricular activities.
[06:37.74]You're one of th best-known actresses on campus,and you play tennis,too.
[06:44.24]Tell us your secret,Amanda,how do you manage it?
[06:48.84]A:(laughing)Anyone can manage it,Tom!
[06:53.83]It's just a question of making the most of your time.
[06:58.43]Sticking to a study schedule lets me really concentrate on my homework when I need to,
[07:06.03]and make time for other things I'm interested in as well.
[07:11.33]T:So organizing your time is the whole story?
[07:16.04]A:Well,knowing how to read helps too.
[07:20.53]T:Knowing how to read?!Surely every university student knows how to read!
[07:26.93]A:Not necessarily,Tom!
[07:30.53]I know a lot of students who read as if every word were essential,
[07:36.54]and that's almost never true.
[07:40.23]I save lots of time by scanning the material first,
[07:45.32]to find the parts that are most relevant.
[07:49.60]T:Great advice,Amanda!Now Marty,what about you?
[07:54.91]I hear you were one of the best students in your high school,
[07:59.61]but your university grades aren't so good.What's wrong?
[08:05.12]M:Nothing's wrong,Tom.I'm just enjoying myself.
[08:10.00]Having fun is important too!
[08:13.61]T:So when they start giving grades forpartying---
[08:17.82]M:I'll be at the top of the class!(General laughter)
[08:21.60]T:Now David-you play football for SJTU,
[08:26.98]but last semester you got three A's.
[08:31.09]I guess you aren't one of those underachieving athletes I've been reading about.
[08:37.20]D:I used to be,Tom.
[08:40.28]But then a tutor showed me how I could use the time I spend exercising
[08:46.29]to memorize biology terms,
[08:50.29]or learn Chinese vocabulary while I'm brushing my teeth.
[08:55.38]Now that I know I can study anywhere,I perform a lot better.

[09:04.16]and a great piece of advice for other students who want to get to the top of the class.

[13:00.93]He's been playing the violin since he was six,
[13:05.61]and you'll be amazed how good he is."

[13:13.70]"I have a rule against helping musicians I don't know.

[13:34.37]The violist resisted.The father persisted.
[13:39.85]Finally she agreed to listen,just to get rid of the man.
[13:45.13]He took out a tape recorder,put a cassette into it,and turned it on.
[13:51.24]the violinist listened,enraptured by what she heard.
[13:56.65]When the tape finished she whispered,"That was beautiful.
[14:02.14]Your son plays like Itzhak Perlman."
[14:07.05]"That was Itzhak Perlman."the father said."But my son plays just like him."
