[06:49.34]Mr.White,who has come here from the United States.
[06:54.43]Mr.White has recently graduated from the University of Chicago,
[07:01.33]where he majored in English and majored in Teaching English
[07:06.92]as a Second Language.
[07:10.13]Mr.White will be working mostly with our daytime classes,
[07:16.22]and he has also graciously consented to take some of our evening classes
[07:23.30]He will be with us here for at least two years.

[10:12.10]4.3 Note-Taking 2.As you listen to the passage,
[10:20.80]take down some notes about the points in your book.
[10:26.10]Let's look back in history to an earlier way of life.
[10:31.30]At one time children didn't have to learn any more
[10:37.28]than how to cope with their physical environment.
[10:42.17]They had to learn to be careful around moving objects,
[10:47.47]to draw back when they got too close to something dangerous.
[10:52.88]They didn't need a special school to learn these things
[10:58.08]other than the school of experience.
[11:02.47]Nor was any formal school necessary for them to learn how to survive
[11:09.47]because their parents taught them all they needed to know
[11:15.08]about how to hunt and to fill the soil.
[11:20.67]But as societies became more complex,
[11:25.17]people depended more on others who were living far away.
[11:31.17]So it became important for children to learn to read and write.
[11:37.08]When money was created,they needed to learn to count and calculate.
[11:43.76]Children had to know these things in order to survive in this new,
[11:50.06]expanded environment.
[11:53.64]Because such skills could not be learned simply
[11:58.73]through first-hand experience,schools became necessary.
