[07:41.40]A long time ago there was a girl called Lone Bird.
[07:47.28]She was the most beautiful girl in her tribe.
[07:51.88]Many young men came to ask her to be their wife
[07:57.07]but the heart of the girl was like winter ice
[08:01.65]and each young man had to return home without her.
[08:07.03]Her father thought of a plan.
[08:11.02]He told all the young men who wanted to marry Lone Bird,
[08:16.30]"Come to the side of the lake at dawn tomorrow and there'll be a race.
[08:22.20]The man who runs the fastest can have Lone Bird for his wife."
[08:28.92]Many young men ran in the race.
[08:33.20]Soon two runners were ahead and at the end of the race they finished together.
[08:41.20]The two men,who had both loved Lone Bird for a long time,
[08:47.28]raced a second time and again finished together.
[08:53.39]They ran a third time but once more there wasn't a winner.
[09:00.79]So Lone Bird didn't have to marry.
[09:06.27]She was happy to be able to live with her parents.
[09:11.26]The years passed and one day
[09:15.26]she realized that her parents would die sooner and later
[09:20.74]and leave her in loneliness.
[09:24.43]She sat quietly by the lake one evening and sadly looked up at the moon.
[09:31.43]"If I had you to love I wouldn't be lonely."
[09:36.34]A God was listening and lifted her up to the moon.
[09:41.72]The next day her father couldn't find her anywhere.
[09:46.92]Then when night cameand he looked up at the moon
[09:52.20]he saw his daughter smiling down, held in the moon's arms.
[09:58.67]Many years have passed but if you look up at the moon
[10:04.47]you can still see the face of Lone Bird smiling down.

[11:16.57]Listening Passage 2
[11:20.75]Pubs are popular places in Britain.
[11:26.05]People can meet each other in an informal atmosphere,
[11:30.96]and they don't have to be too polite!
[11:34.96]Nevertheless there are one or two customs you should know.
[11:40.16]If you've been invited to a pub then your friend will buy you the first drink,
[11:46.25]but will expect you to buy the next round of drinks.
[11:51.63]Groups of people usually take turns buying rounds of drinks.
[11:57.04]A round is often called a "shout";
[11:56.04]a common way of announcing your turn is to say:"It's my shout."
[12:01.83]Buying rounds can get expensive,
[12:05.65]but if that's the custom your friends are following
[12:10.35]then you have to follow it too.
[12:14.14]If you've just arrived from a foreign country
[12:18.24]your friends may excuse you once for being unfamiliar with the custom,
[12:23.93]but otherwise you'll be expected to participate.
[12:28.74]Leaving the party before buying your shout is very bad form.
[12:34.44]You can buy non-alcoholic drinks in a pub,
[12:38.64]but you're still expected to buy your round.
[12:42.85]And being a woman is no excuse either.
[12:47.24]Women are as welcome in pubs as men
[12:52.15]and the custom of buying rounds applies to them too.
[12:57.03]Question 6) Why do people like about pubs?
[13:10.72]Question 7) What is the custom when it comes to buying drinks?
[13:18.61]Question 8) How does "It's my shout" mean?
[13:38.88]Question 9) What may excuse you from buying a round?
[13:53.77]Question 10) What is considered bad form?
