[02:16.20]and welcome to just Numbers,our weekly collection of odd facts
[02:22.50]Our question for tonight is:
[02:26.39]What does the man on the street really think of science and scientists
[02:32.79]In order to find out
[02:36.00]New Scientist magazine
[02:40.00]conducted a survey of 1901 average British citizens,
[02:47.00]asking for their views on various aspects of science and technology
[02:53.09]The results of the survey were fascination
[02:57.48]and at times rather alarming.
[03:01.37]The first question in the survey was:
[03:05.26]What do you consider the greatest scientific achievement
[03:10.43]since World War II?
[03:13.72]The most frequent response 36% was don't know.
[03:22.11]Space exploration came in a poor second,
[03:26.89]at 17%,and computers were in third place,
[03:32.79]with a stunning 9%.
[03:36.89]The next question New Scientist posed in its survey was
[03:42.20]Name three famous scientists,living or dead.
[03:47.71]And who do you think turned out to be the most famous
[03:52.20]and popular scientist of all time,
[03:56.41]mentioned by a full 47% of the respondents to the survey?
[04:02.70]Albert Einstein?
[04:05.81]No,he came in second, with 28%.
[04:11.90]Sir Isaac Newton?
[04:15.29]He was third only 13% of the public named Newton.
[04:21.59]First place went to have you guessed?
[04:25.98]Don't Know.
[04:28.88]Although the public is clearly not very impressed
[04:33.48]with individual scientists and specific scientific achievements
[04:39.48]we're glad to report that
[04:43.77]the survey did reveal a few positive opinions about science
[04:49.75]Only 11% of the people questioned
[04:55.26]said that they feel science does more harm than good.
[05:00.36]And a full 19% proclaimed
[05:04.67]that they have a great deal of confidence
[05:09.05]in science and the scientific community.
[05:13.55]If any scientists are listening:Don't worry.
[05:18.46]The survey provided some insight
[05:23.16]into how to improve science's public image.
[05:28.15]The statistics showed that in general,
[05:32.25]people who have studied more science in school
[05:37.45]are stronger supporter of science.
[05:41.45]So as usual,education seems to be the key to popularity
