[13:20.23]"Be patient,"Simon said."She's old
[13:25.83]She'll die soon."
[13:29.22]But the years passed
[13:32.51]and it looked as if aunt Ethel was never going to die.
[13:38.21]Jenny often quarreled with Simon
[13:42.91]Aunt Ethel had destroyed their happiness.
[13:47.51]Then suddenly, one day Aunt Ethel died.
[13:53.20]Jenny and simon were so happy.
[13:57.69]They were free at last
[14:02.08]"I couldn't have lived with your aunt in this house much longer,"
[14:09.79]Jenny said.What do you mean,my aunt?Simon said
[14:16.69]I thought she was your aunt.
[14:20.37]4.3 Note-Taking
[14:31.16]3)Now listen to a lecture on Pronunciation Achievement Factors twice
[14:39.65]As you listen, take down some notes about the following points.
[14:45.92]Today's lecture is on the subject of Pronunciation Achievement Factors
[14:52.11]As an introduction we should ask ourselves three questions.
[14:58.01]Why should it be difficult for adults
[15:01.80]to learn accurate pronunciation in a foreign language?
[15:07.00]Secondly,why do some people achieve better results than others?
[15:13.21]And thirdly, what factors predict who will achieve good pronunciation?
[15:20.11]There have been several research studies
[15:24.11]identifying factors that affect performance
[15:28.81]Professor James Sutter the American language researcher
[15:34.40]found four significant factors.
[15:38.40]Firstly,and perhaps the most significant was the mother tongue
[15:44.54]The closer the students own language is to English to start with
[15:51.04]the greater the chance of high achievement.
[15:55.32]Secondly,he discovered that the learners attitude to pronunciation
[16:01.52]makes a difference
[16:04.49]Students who believe in the importance of pronunciation
[16:09.48]tend to make more progress.
[16:13.17]Thirdly,contact with native speakers of the language
[16:18.76]has strong positive effects on pronunciation.
[16:23.95]Fourthly,and possibly the least important,
[16:28.76]was the students own natural ability.
[16:33.04]A good ear and the ability to imitate help
[16:37.85]but are far less significant than the other three factors.
[16:43.05]Two other factors were tested but found to a little overall importance:
[16:51.36]the sex of the student and the personality
[16:55.95]whether the learner is introverted or extroverted
[17:01.44]outgoing or shy.
[17:04.84]What conclusions can be drawn form these studies?
[17:09.54]We can't change the first factor the mother tongue
[17:14.53]but we can control the second and third.
[17:19.12]Therefore,we have considerable influence over our own progress
[17:25.42]with pronunciation.
