[00:04.00]Most students don't know how to study read.
[00:08.83]They usually open their textbooks to the assigned page and start reading.
[00:15.86]But before long, their minds have wandered off somewhere.
[00:21.79]Or they read and mark up the pages
[00:27.14]by underlining everything that seems important.

[00:37.64]You are expected to remember more, and in most cases,
[00:43.91]will be tested on what you read.
[00:48.56]Here is a four-step method for study reading
[00:54.10]that can help improve comprehension
[00:59.35]and promote retention of what is read.
[01:04.52]Step One:Prepare to Read
[01:08.68]It's important to prepare yourself to read.
[01:14.21]Much time can be lost when you try plunk yourself
[01:20.56]into reading an assigned chapter when your mind isn't ready.
[01:27.12]Because you can think faster than you can read,
[01:32.19]your mind can easily go into daydreams ot other thoughts
[01:38.72]if you aren't ready to read an assignment.
[01:43.47]The wisest thing to do is skim over the chapter to be read.
[01:50.42]Let the title sink in .
[01:53.95]Read an opening paragraph or two see what the chapter is about.
[02:00.69]Then read the headings and subheadings.
[02:05.83]Next read the summary or the last couple of paragraphs.
[02:12.00]It many not make a lot of sense,
[02:16.15]but your mind will begin to clear out other thoughts.
[02:21.79]You'll begin to think about the content of the chapter.
[02:27.25]If there are study questions at the end of chapter, read those.
[02:34.70]Having questions about what you are reading helps concentration
[02:41.54]and gives you a purpose for reading.
[02:46.40]Step Two:Read
[02:49.95]After you've looked over the chapter, you are ready to read.
[02:55.91]If you don't have any questions about the content of the chapter, make some up.
[03:03.85]You can do this by turning the title and headings into questions.
[03:11.11]If you are reading a long chapter, don't try to read too much at once.
[03:18.87]It's better if you read from one heading to the next.
[03:24.51]Then stop and follow Step Three below.
[03:29.76]If there are no headings in the chapter,read about two pages;
[03:36.42]then stop and follow Step Three below.
[03:41.57]Step Three:Examine What You Read
[03:46.43]By reading only short passages and then stopping,
[03:51.89]you stand a better chance of concentrating on the chapter's content.
[03:58.52]The third step is now to examine what you read.
[04:03.98]Put the textbook aside, and write some notes in your own words.
[04:10.54]In a few key words or phrases, write down the major points you just read.
[04:18.19]Research shows that doing this aids comprehension
[04:24.33]and retention for future tests.
[04:28.90]If you don't believe in taking reading notes,
[04:33.84]at least try to recite to yourself th key points you just read.
[04:40.89]When you are satisfied  you understand what you read,
[04:46.15]then read from the next heading to the next,
[04:51.21]stopping every once in a while to take notes or go over what you read.
[04:58.76]Follow this step until you are finished with the chapter.
[05:04.80]Though this may seem slow,
[05:08.53]as you practice this study reading technique,
[05:13.57]you'll discover it's really faster because you don't waste time
[05:19.82]by losing concentration or having to reread what you've read.
[05:26.45]Step Four:Plan to Review
[05:31.18]This last step does not take place immediately after you read,
[05:37.42]but it's very important for remembering what you read
[05:43.56]and can mean the diffence between a C and an A on a test.
[05:49.91]You should make a definite plan to review your reading notes every week.
[05:56.94]As you move through a course, you have more and more to learn.
[06:02.97]You can't remember it all.In fact,
[06:08.33]unless we review every week what has been studied before.
[06:14.49]we can forget over 80 percent of what we read .
[06:19.82]So plan to review once a week.
[06:24.76]Go over your notes. If they don't make sense when you review,
[06:32.10]go back to the chapter and reread what isn't clear.
[06:38.24](It's important to write chapter titles
[06:42.49]and page references to key points in your notes
[06:47.85]so you can find things quickly when you review.
[06:53.00]Research shows it's not so much how long you study
[06:58.85]that gets good grades,
[07:02.30]but how well and how often you study.
[07:07.05]Try this four-step method(PREP)and watch those grades go up.
