迈克尔．波顿1953年2月出生于美国康涅狄格州，他从13岁时就开始了在酒吧演唱的生涯，而他出道的上世纪70年代，正是“重金属”和“硬摇滚”开始风行的时期，迈克尔．波顿参与的第一支乐队“黑杰克”Blackjack就是“硬摇滚”风格的，其主要的外在标志就是一头长发。1975年，他以原名发行了《迈克尔．博洛廷》这张同名专辑，1976年和1985年，他又出版了《Every Day Of My Life》(我生命中的每一天)和Everybody’s Crazy》两张专辑，在这段时期，他的音乐风格以硬摇滚为主，沙哑的嗓音充满了力度。
改唱情歌两获格莱美大奖

　　1987年9月，迈克尔．波顿推出了专辑《渴望》(The Hunger)，这成为他事业上的转折点，在这张专辑中，他舍弃了硬摇滚风格，音乐也转变成以灵歌及蓝调为主的流行曲风，但长发的造型却一直没怎么改变。




　　1989年7月，他推出的专辑《灵魂供应者》(Soul Provider)终于使他成为超级明星，专辑售出了400万张，歌曲《没有你我怎么活》(How am I Supposed to Live Without you)也为他夺下当年的格莱美音乐大奖的最佳流行男歌手的殊荣。随后的1991年，专辑《时间、爱情与温柔》又在全球销售至少1300万张，其中的歌曲《当一个男人爱上一个女人》(When a Man Loves a Woman)为他赢得了第二个格莱美奖以及两个全美音乐奖。
