《歌舞青春》于2006年一月首映时，迪士尼频道的高级主管们确信这是一部兼具幽默与创新的歌舞剧，但他们却完全没有料到该剧播出后，在世界各地所造成的疯潮。电影首播创下迪士尼频道原创电影于美国境内的最高收视率，接着在世界各地迪士尼频道和全世界各大无线电视台播出后都纷纷创下收视热潮，总计在世界100多个国家播映，收看人口累积超过1亿6千万。

　　“孩子们其实非常渴望拥有一部真正属于他们的当代音乐剧。”迪士尼频道副总裁麦克·西利说，“剧中人的所作所为引发了孩子们仿效的热潮，比如打破小团体、不受束缚、尝试新事物并通过唱歌和跳舞来展现自我。”歌舞青春首播后，舞台剧版本已经在全美超过1500个高中和小区剧院上演，世界巡回场次甚至更多。

　　这股《歌舞青春》风潮造就了一系列相关青少年小说的热卖；迪士尼乐园顺势推出歌舞青春主题秀；在北美45个巡回演唱会的门票悉数售光，同时巡演还造访了5个南美洲国家；另外，还有舞台剧版本的世界巡演和在2007年底推出的冰上表演。《歌舞青春》勇夺2006年冠军专辑，和2006年全美电视电影DVD销售冠军。紧接着在2008年，华特迪士尼电影公司也预计推出以《歌舞青春》为蓝本的同名电影。

　　除了粉丝们无法抗拒的优美音乐、魅力十足的演员以及活力四射的舞蹈，《歌舞青春》还荣获了诸多肯定，包括：2项艾美奖、1项DGA奖、1项电视影评人协会奖、1个影像奖以及1项美国导演工会奖；电视原声带也荣获告示牌音乐奖年度最佳原声带。

　　正因为如此多的辉煌纪录，迪士尼频道召回幕后所有原班人马，开始筹备续集。第一步，自然是找回导演肯尼·奥特加。“肯尼·奥特加洋溢的才华绝对是《歌舞青春》成功的重要关键之一，”西利说，“他将该剧融入了令人赞叹的华丽与激情，把编剧彼得·巴索奇尼的优秀剧本转化成一部如此精彩的音乐剧。能与他一起工作真的很荣幸。”

　　与奥特加一起获得艾美奖最佳编舞的邦妮·史多瑞、查尔斯和卡拉普也归队，另外还有编剧巴索奇尼、艾美奖得主，执行制作比尔·波顿、巴瑞?罗森布什以及监制唐·夏伊。

　　在祖国西班牙巴塞隆纳拍摄《花豹女孩2》而名声大噪的摄影大师丹尼尔?安瑞佑被延任为摄影总监。“那部电影看起来美呆了，”西利说，“丹尼尔实在是个不可多得的人才。”

　　原班演员也重回《歌舞青春2》，包括饰演特洛伊和凯碧的Zac Efron(扎克·埃夫隆)以及Vanessa Anne Hudgens(凡妮莎·安·哈金斯)。“他俩堪称是当今最佳情侣档，而且都有一种纯真又温柔的特质。这两个小孩用自己的方式去体验复杂人生，并获得其它孩子的认同。”西利说。

　　西利还指出其它受到粉丝们喜爱的演员们这次也将重返演出。他说：“像饰演查德的科宾·布鲁在首部《歌舞青春》电影中的角色固然出色，但这次他在续集里戏份更多。查德是个讨好的角色，而且科宾的表演也很出色。我们这次同时也加重雷恩(由才华洋溢的卢卡斯·加比尔饰演)的戏份。在续集中，他将摆脱姐姐夏培(Evans小姐)的阴影，并正视自己身为一个朋友和表演者的价值。”

　　续集最大的挑战是满足广大粉丝们的期望。显而易见，让粉丝们热爱并支持的角色保留原味是成功的关键。西利接着介绍说：“我们知道为夏培布局所埋下的种子就要开花结果了。当她认定特洛伊是全校头号男生后，就竭尽所能地阻止他接近心爱之人，凯碧。这种诱惑和伎俩就是电影剧情的核心。究竟Tory会不会被诱惑呢？”
