The fishery authorities in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province have released 2 million rare salmon fry into the Heilongjiang and Wusuli rivers along the Sino-Russian border.
Local authorities say the move aims to bolster stock and maintain bio-diversity.
It takes around six months until salmon fry hatchlings grow to five or six centimeters long and are ready for release. They travel to the Bering Sea in the next two months and return to the rivers to breed when they are mature.
There are plans to release more than 10 species of fish fry into the rivers between June and October.
Fuyuan County, where the salmon was released, boasts abundant fishery resources. The local people have put more than 600 million rare fish fry into the two rivers since the 1980s.
China and Russia signed an agreement in 1994 on the protection of resources along the rivers bordering the two countries.

Renovation is underway for the oldest runway at Beijing Capital International Airport, the busiest aviation hub in China, a task that affects around 200 flights daily.
The airport's central runway is undergoing a major renovation from May 23 to 28. The last overhaul took place in 1996.
During the process, the airport has just two runways in operation, and airline numbers are reduced, with many being adjusted to land in other airports. Beijing has two airports that serve commercial aviation, the Beijing Capital Airport and Beijing Nanyuan International Airport.
Some flights have been diverted to Tianjin Binhai International Airport and Shijiazhuang Zhengding International Airport during the period.
The 3,000-meter central runway under renovation was put into use in 1958. Beijing Capital airport is the second-busiest airport in the world by the number of passengers it handles, second only to Atlanta International Airport in the United States.
