[08:55.92]Listen carefully and then answer the questions that follow.Questions 1 to 5 are based on an interview.
[09:02.04]At the end of the interview, you will be given 10 seconds to answer each of the following 5 questions.
[09:08.71]Now listen to the interview.
[09:10.90]Interviewer (W): Well, Mr. Fox. Would you please describe your feelings towards criminals?
[09:16.26]Superintendent(M): It is true to say there are criminals,
[09:19.65]certain types of criminals who policemen have...er...I have to be very careful with what I say.
[09:26.00]W: Umm.
[09:26.38]M: You see, I know a...a person who has been caught
[09:29.78]so many times that he's...he becomes part and parcel of the station.
[09:35.03]W: Umm. He's been brought in all the time.
[09:37.54]M: He's always in and he's a cheerful sort of character. And it's his way of life.
[09:42.35]And this sort of people of course...are people that you...well, I say, have an affinity with,
[09:50.01]that's not the right word to use, but you have a closeness with, you know.
[09:54.82]W: They are part of your work, aren't they?
[09:56.79]M: You know, Old Sam is always in. And you can always guarantee that Old Sam is always in.
[10:02.80]And you can always guarantee that Old Fred will do something stupid
[10:06.85]about a week before Christmas so that he can spend Christmas in a certain prison.
[10:11.23]W: Which he likes.
[10:13.09]M: Which he likes because he has a good Christmas. Then, of course,
[10:17.13]you go to the other end of the scale where you have a hard-core minority who are the professional criminals.
[10:22.71]And of course, one has no sympathy for them.
[10:25.78]W: British policemen are not armed, that is they do not carry guns. How do policemen feel about this?
[10:32.45]M: I don't think the average policeman really thinks about it, you know.
[10:37.04]I honestly think he does not think about it at all. I am sure he did, he would probably be a worried man.
[10:43.38]W: Umm.
[10:44.26]M: The reason I say that is this, that the average policemen in this country feels that
[10:50.28]the average Englishman or Britisher is such a person
[10:53.66]that the use of arms and that sort of thing is foreign to his nature.
[10:57.71]W: Um, he just wouldn't think of using a pistol or something.
[11:01.78]M: Of course, it is true to say that there are certain elements
[11:04.85]in the world who are...er...resorting to firearms.
[11:08.57]W: The organized professional criminals?
[11:11.41]M: The organized professional criminals, this sort of people.
[11:14.69]Well, of course, one takes one's chances which you don't think about, you know?
[11:19.95]W: But your impression is that England is not a violent society.
[11:24.32]M: Well, I don't think we are a violent people.
[11:28.03]You see, I think as a nation, if I can put it that way, we are...er...we love compromise, you know?
[11:35.80]W: Umm.
[11:36.78]M: Everything we do is a compromise and I think in that...er... because of that
[11:41.70]I think probably we are not so violent.
[11:43.68]W: Have you faced a man with a weapon for instance?
[11:47.39]M: I haven't faced a man with a weapon.
[11:49.70]I have had an occasion where I had a man he has...er...locked himself into a house
[11:55.82] and he wouldn't come out and he was threatening people with all sorts of things.
[12:00.08]W: What did you do in that particular case?
[12:02.93]M: Well, you just go and sit down and have a chat with him. You talk to him.
[12:07.63]You start talking outside the building and you walk in and you eventually
[12:12.17]get to the bottom of the stairs and
[12:13.67]you talk and talk and you try to build up some understanding or some common point,
[12:19.35]some common denominator between you.
[12:22.84]W: Understanding?
[12:24.04]M: Understanding...once you do that then you have this...
[12:27.65]W: You mean you have to get his trust first?
[12:30.82]M: I think so.
[12:32.13]W: This is what you did on this particular occasion?
[12:35.31]M: Yes, and I hope this doesn't sound pompous?
[12:39.02]W: No.
[12:39.89]M: And this is it and of course, everything works out quite well. You have got to be patient.
