[14:02.77]This month Reader's Digest is publishing its 1,000th issue.
[14:08.90]The magazine boasts a mammoth circulation of 41 million worldwide,
[14:14.59]reaching 48 countries and is publishing in 19 languages.
[14:19.40]Recently, it held a gala party in New York City with a futuristic theme.
[14:25.31]The robot greeting partygoers to Reader's Digest's celebration of
[14:29.69]the publication of its 1,000th issue is not really high tech,
[14:34.28]just an actor hiding behind a wall with a microphone.
[14:38.32]And some of the futuristic trends showcased at this party don't seem all that new.
[14:44.23]The car of the future is no ingenious hybrid running on innovative fuel,
[14:49.81]it is a gas-guzzling Mercedes SUV and some of the furniture
[14:55.38]in the home of the future has a distinctly 1960s look.
[14:59.78]Reader's Digest?founders Dewitt Wallace and his wife Lila launched the magazine in 1922 with a mission:
[15:08.10]to help new immigrants learn how to become American citizens.
[15:12.15]They reprinted condensed articles from around the country.
[15:16.52]Articles that heralded the individual's triumph over adversity, but in as few words as possible.
[15:23.41]Professor Don Ranly, head of the magazine department at the University of Missouri's School of Journalism,
[15:30.85]says brevity was Mr. Wallace's genius.

[16:08.85]The European Union is not on its knees, said Jean-Claude Juncker, Prime Minister of Luxembourg and
[16:16.39]President of the European Council at the recent summit in Washington. Yet, several days earlier,
[16:22.41]Mr. Juncker declared in Brussels the Continent is in a state of deep crisis over the failure of
[16:28.02]European leaders to agree on the Union's budget. Failure to find common economic ground came just weeks
[16:34.47]after voters in France and the Netherlands dealt, what some observers call, a lethal blow to the Union's
[16:41.15]proposed new constitution. And they say the first casualty of Europe's latest crisis is EU's further expansion.

[17:12.76]India's textile exports to Western countries have surged following the abolition of global quotas earlier this year.
[17:22.60]The old quotas limited the amount of textiles any country could export to another.
[17:28.95]India's textile and garment exports to Europe between January and May rose by 11 percent
[17:36.16]compared with the same period last year, and to the United States by more than 20 percent.
[17:41.74]However, India has only a four percent share in the global textile and garment market -- far behind China.
[17:48.85]Indian exporters say some Western retailers have begun increasing purchases from India partially to
[17:56.53]offset any future appreciation of the Chinese yuan, which Beijing allowed to rise by two percent recently.
[18:04.19]But exporters such as Mr. Hinduja warn that the Indian industry must introduce economies of scale and better
[18:12.93]technology to remain competitive. Officials estimate that India's exports will rise nearly four times,
[18:19.39]to $50 billion by 2010, up from $13.5 billion last year.
