Russia has given Ukraine until the early hours of Monday to surrender the besieged southern city of Mariupol as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he is ready for peace negotiations with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.

According to a Russian state news agency, RIA, Russia's Defense Ministry wants a response from Ukraine's military by 5 a.m. Moscow time.

A statement by Colonel-General Mikhail Mizintsev, the director of the Russian National Center for Defense Management, referred to Ukrainian troops as "odious bandits."

The ultimatum came hours after Zelenskyy told cnn in an interview broadcast Sunday that failure to reach a negotiated agreement with Russia would mean that this is "a third World War."

Earlier Sunday, President Zelenskyy made an emotional appeal to Israel for its help against Russia.

In a video address to Israeli lawmakers Sunday, President Zelenskyy compared the invasion to the actions of Nazi Germany during World War II.

He accused President Putin of trying to carry out a "final solution" against Ukraine, using the Nazi term for its genocide of 6 million Jews during that period.

Israel has emerged as a key mediator between Ukraine and Russia.
