[00:-2.00]within seven seconds of meeting them.
[00:-3.00]Consciously or unconsciously,
[00:-4.00]we show our true feelings with our eyes, faces,
[00:-5.00]bodies and attitudes, causing a chain of reactions,
[00:-6.00]ranging from comfort to fear.
[00:-7.00]Think about some of your most unforgettable meetings:
[00:-8.00]an introduction to your future spouse,
[00:-9.00]a job interview, an encounter with a stranger.
[00:10.00]Focus on the first seven seconds.
[00:11.00]What did you feel and think?
[00:12.00]How did you "read" the other person?
[00:13.00]How do you think he read you?
[00:14.00]You are the message.
[00:15.00]For 25 years I've worked with thousands who want to be successful.
[00:16.00]I've helped them make persuasive presentations,
[00:17.00]answer unfriendly questions, communicate more effectively.
[00:18.00]The secret has always been you are the message.
[00:19.00]Others will want to be with you and help you if you use your good qualities.
[00:20.00]They include: physical appearance, energy, rate of speech,
[00:21.00]pitch and tone of voice, gestures, expression through the eyes,
[00:22.00]and the ability to hold the interest of others.
[00:23.00]Others form an impression about you based on these.
[00:24.00]Think of times when you know you made a good impression.
[00:25.00]What made you successful?
[00:26.00]You were committed to what you were talking about
[00:27.00]and so absorbed in the moment, you lost all self-consciousness.
[00:28.00]Be yourself. Many how-to books advise you to stride into a room
[00:29.00]and impress others with your qualities.
[00:30.00]They instruct you to greet them with "power handshakes"
[00:31.00]and tell you to fix your eyes on the other person.
[00:32.00]If you follow all this advice,
[00:33.00]you’ll drive everyone crazy — including yourself.
[00:34.00]The trick is to be consistently you, at your best.
[00:35.00]The most effective people never change from one situation to another.
[00:36.00]They’re the same whether they're having a conversation,
[00:37.00]addressing their garden club or being interviewed for a job.
[00:38.00]They communicate with their whole being;
[00:39.00]the tones of their voices and their gestures match their words.
[00:40.00]Public speakers, however, often send mixed messages.
[00:41.00]My favorite is the kind who say,
[00:42.00]"Ladies and gentlemen. I'm very happy to be here"
[00:43.00]— while looking at their shoes.
[00:44.00]They don't look happy. They look angry, frightened or depressed.
[00:45.00]The audience always believe what they see over what they hear.
[00:46.00]They think, "He's telling me he's happy, but he's not.
[00:47.00]He's not being honest."
[00:48.00]Use your eyes.
[00:49.00]Whether you’re talking to one person or one hundred,
[00:50.00]always remember to look at them.
[00:51.00]Some people start to say something while looking right at you,
[00:52.00]but three words into the sentence,
[00:53.00]they break eye contact and look out the window.
[00:54.00]As you enter a room, move your eyes comfortably;
[00:55.00]then look straight at those in the room and smile.
[00:56.00]Smiling is important. It shows you are relaxed.
[00:57.00]Some think entering a room full of people
[00:58.00]is like going into a lion's cage.
[00:59.00]I disagree. If I did agree,
[-1:00.00]I certainly wouldn't look at my feet or at the ceiling.
[-1:-1.00]I'd keep my eyes on the lion!
[-1:-2.00]Lighten up. Once in a staff meeting,
[-1:-3.00]one of the most powerful chairmen in the entertainment industry
[-1:-4.00]became very angry over tiny problems,
[-1:-5.00]scolded each worker and enjoyed making them fear him.
[-1:-6.00]When he got to me, he shouted, "And you, Ailes, what are you doing?"
[-1:-7.00]I said, "Do you mean now, this evening or for the rest of my life?"
[-1:-8.00]There was a moment of silence.
[-1:-9.00]Then the chairman threw back his head and roared with laughter.
