[00:-1.00]SAN FRANCISCO (cnn)
[00:-2.00]—For generations of students,
[00:-3.00]writing term papers has been a major source of nerves and frustration,
[00:-4.00]if not the ultimate homework nightmare.
[00:-5.00]But for those with Internet access, illicit resources are just a few links away.
[00:-6.00]The contemporary student
[00:-7.00]who wants to fake a term paper does not have to search far.
[00:-8.00]All one has to do is to go to the appropriate Web site,
[00:-9.00]where online papers can either be purchased, ordered,or downloaded for free.
[00:10.00]Collegiate Care Research Assistance, for instance, may do the job.
[00:11.00]Do you want to "write" a paper on "Hamlet’s irreconcilable moral dilemmas?"
[00:12.00]Simply hand over $29.75, and the essay is yours.
[00:13.00]For those who find this too great an expense, there is an alternative.
[00:14.00]Collegiate Care, with its "highest quality papers at the lowest possible prices,"
[00:15.00]offers on-file papers for $5.95 per page.
[00:16.00]So,a few pages may just do the trick for the cost-conscious student.
[00:17.00]Genius Papers,another student assistance site,
[00:18.00]offers "high-quality" and "low-priced" term papers.
[00:19.00]"You will be happy and successful,"the Web site promises potential consumers.
[00:20.00]If you are too lazy or simply too busy writing your own term paper,
[00:21.00]Genius Papers is readily available.
[00:22.00]For a one-time fee of $9.95,
[00:23.00]you get access to pre-written papers for an entire semester.
[00:24.00]Some sites, such as Term Paper Emporium and Absolutely Free:
[00:25.00]Online Essays offer course papers for free.
[00:26.00]Simply press the button and download
[00:27.00]—if you find the paper you want, that is.
[00:28.00]Students are,of course, fully aware of these Web site resources,
[00:29.00]and some people worry that the Internet,
[00:30.00]once hailed as the ultimate learning tool,
[00:31.00]could become the best aid yet for cheating.
[00:32.00]For teachers, the problem is figuring out
[00:33.00]whether a student’s author-ship is authentic.
[00:34.00]But,as teaching assistant Jane Morrison explained,
[00:35.00]the task may not be too difficult for the perceiving teacher.
[00:36.00]"Students who have gotten it off the Internet don’t look at me,
[00:37.00]twitch a little bit and look at their feet.
[00:38.00]And students who wrote every bit of it can talk about the paper very intelligently
[00:39.00]and look me in the eye," Morrison said.
[00:40.00]Faking term papers is nothing new,
[00:41.00]and stolen intellectual property has been marketed for years.
[00:42.00]But the appearance of the Internet raises the issue:
[00:43.00]Is this new technology making cheating more widespread?
[00:44.00]A senior official at Berkeley doubts it.
[00:45.00]"Students who are inclined to cheat are going to cheat regardless of the technology.
[00:46.00]I think it’s sort of a cynical notion
[00:47.00]to think that this new tool is going to spread the incidence of cheating,"
[00:48.00]Gary Handman said.
[00:49.00]This view was backed by Berkeley graduate student Arianne Chernock,
[00:50.00]who says that, after all, students have to decide what’s best for themselves.
[00:51.00]"It’s a question of honesty.
[00:52.00]We’re here to learn,so we’ve got to make the most of it ourselves."
[00:53.00]And inventive teachers can make their assignments almost cheat-proof.
[00:54.00]"If you structure the assignment in a creative way,
[00:55.00]and if students,for instance,have to transform the information into a hand-out,
[00:56.00]or do a drama,or write an account in first person narrative,
[00:57.00]then you may curb illicit work,"said library media teacher Leslie Farmer.
[00:58.00]That kind of strategy, some experts say,
[00:59.00]will basically force students to do more than simply download their education.
